I am on an Alcohol reduction plan, past month, trying to limit myself to 2 drinks less than or equal to 5x/wk, so far drinking less than that. for my health.

Tonight I ran into:
"Steel Reserve" (High Gravity), 8.1 alc., 24 oz can, The Steel Brewing Co, Milwaukee, WI, Very nice! Highly recommended. From wal-mart, spfld, mo. One of my recent favorites!

I have to admit steel reserve wouldn't be my 1st choice. But congrats on expanding your horizons.

FYI, if limiting yourself to 'standard drinks', 24oz of an 8.1% drink would be 3 'drinks'.

So in an effort to limit alcohol consumption for your health, you landed on Steel Reserve High Gravity?
8.1%, Yes! It was a splurge but still low cost, my wife was with me. She actually wanted to get 6 different bottled beers at different store. I'm tighter than bark on a tree. This was cheaper, ha.

I have only experienced Steel Reserve when it was on fire sale at the keg shop in like 2006. Hard pass.

I thought it was good, really good actually. I guess what do I know right?

3 drinks, exactly! Another reason I bought it. You're on to me! (about 3 5.4% beers, but it wasn't really) Edit: It was only 8.1% alc per the 24 oz./ or per volume. It seemed very weak. Still tasted great though.

one of my most inebriated nights at ISU was when I pregamed a jungle juice party with a 40's of Steel Reserve during an ISU BB loss to Baylor in 2012. Point is not very confident that Steel Reserve is the best choice if your goal is alcohol reduction...

I sometimes get a Steel when I'm feeling nostalgic about Iowa State football.

Flexin' Friday!

I'd recommend Icehouse. You can get them in 24 ouncers too, but only 5.5% so you're bringing down your alcohol consumption a bit.

I had never had a Steel before. I thought it was very good. And I have tried quite a few different beers, but not that many really considering how many different brands are out there! Only scratching the surface.

I just looked them up. They are owned by Origlio Beverage, who I found out owns 68-69 brewries, count 'em! Wow. Never heard of them before.

Trust me. I knew what I was doing. It was a one can (24 oz, 8.1% beer) equivalent to about 3+ drinks (3 5.4% 12 oz. drinks). I wanted 3 last night.

A month or two it was nothing for me to drink 3-6 drink equivalents per night, or more sometimes. I had been raising my level slowly due to different things. So as I said, making a decision to cut back severely was needed for me. I was going in the wrong direction.

Good on you for recognizing it was becoming a problem before it became something worse.

I made a mistake opening a thread about beer, in the football forum. My bad. In the future if I feel the need, I will go to 'Off-Topic'.

I was in the student section when Jeff Hornacek showed up. A walk-on if I remember right. He could really pass the ball.

But since we are here now, I am a little confused on this 24 oz. can of Steel Reserve I bought yesterday. It said it has "8.1% alc. / Vol."

When I first saw that I thought, wow an 8.1 beer, alright! But when I drank it, it didn't seem strong at all. In fact it seemed more like a 4.05 beer. My wife had a couple of sips also!

I was wondering when the brewery put on the can that it is '8.1% by volume', does that mean that the entire 24 oz can is only 8.1%? Thus it is only 2 - 12 oz, 4.1% beers really. Kind of deceiving advertising if true if you ask me.

No. That's not how it works.

When stated that way, X% of any given volume of liquid, in this case 8.1%, is alcohol.

alternately, and less commonly, it can be measured by weight.
