Below is an updated roster by position & class. It will be interesting the direction TJ goes with his last 2 scholarships.
The biggest question marks on the below roster for me are:
Our 2nd biggest roster risk IMO is post. I like a player like Payton at Indian Hills. He is a different type of player from our other 4 post players. Uber athletic, rebounding machine and plays in the paint.

- Do we have a back-up PG? I would like to think Walker is that guy, but he was very turnover prone as a freshman. He turned the ball over at a similar level as Bolton. Hopefully, that was freshman inexperience and rust coming off a HS senior year injury. Jackson has a PG build, but for some reason he struggled under Prohm. His dribble wasn't great, nor his passing.
- Hinson's status. If he is healthy, he could be one of ISU's best players. He also gives ISU an long/physical perimeter player. Even if Hinson isn't healthy, I still like our wing shooters. Grill, Kalscheur, Johnson and Jackson all have potential to be 10ppg guys at the SG/Wing position.
- Do we have 2 Big12 caliber post players. If Foster is healthy and he can guard Big12 stretch 4's- then I love our post flexibility and combinations TJ could play to create mismatches.
- If a newcomer can't play at a Big12 level?
- If a players game doesn't fit TJ's system?
- If a starter or key backup is injured?

How about CASPWWAFH? Coach after Steve Prohm who was after Fred Hoiberg . . . That way the Prohm haters and Hoiberg fans both get to mention their man.
How about Moser from Loyola? Or do you think a coach who has led Loyola to 2 final fours in the last 3 years is worth even contacting?
I for one am EXCITED about what's happening in Cyclone basketball. I think we have a coach with a clear vision of where he wants to take the program and is aggressively building a roster to accomplish it. And, he's not afraid to pass on guys who don't fit the program, even if they can fill a stat sheet. I can't wait to see the team come together.

I feel like all of that could be said about any coach that takes any job.
Problem is you're looking for a one year guy to come in and play less than 10 minutes a game. Adding a multi year guy could cost you Lipsley. I have a hard time buying that the guy that's ok with that scenario probably isn't better than the guys currently on the roster.
I’m not really a hater. Personally I’m impartial toward him. I just don’t see any real evidence that he’s a good coach.
But also, what is his clear vision? Bringing in his own guys? That’s every coach’s vision.
I’m guessing the plan is Hunter plays most of the PG minutes. And they roll with Walker/Grill/Johnson in spot minutes as needed. Or who knows, maybe the new coaches develop Jackson there, but Walker still more likely.

He’s basically doing the CMC plan. Although TJs plan is based on the “suffocate the upper midwest” recruiting strategy. The Upper Midwest Big 12 option thing.
It’s pretty normal for a coach to be good at one school and not another. He was also pretty good his first HC job, and his second stop he went in fill rebuild mode after the first year. So it’s hard to gauge since he came to the job he wanted all along before finishing said rebuild. UNLV also hired from within, because they wanted to continue what TJ started.
If you can’t root for a first year head coach at Iowa State, you probably should find another team. Baylor maybe? Then next year you can root for whoever wins? Or actually you should be an Oklahoma fan since they hired your guy.
