G-League offering alternative to one-and-done

I wonder how much of this had to do with the NCAA recommendations vs Levar Ball trying to develop his own Basketball league targeting high schoolers.

Does this hurt bluebloods more? Seems like guys in the top 50-150 wouldn't go for the quick cash grab.

Most notable part from the article:

Without the restrictions of the NCAA's amateurism rules, players will also be free to hire agents, profit off their likenesses and pursue marketing deals from sneaker companies and the like, which could be worth hundreds of thousands of dollars in endorsement opportunities to top prospects.

Depends who tries it. I see pros and cons to both sides. Less exposure but clean money w/o school might entice top players. I think how big the g-league can get with a couple top players going will key this.

I think calipari will be the most affected. The trickle down where one of his players leaves then having to go to the next tier could affect teams like Iowa State.

Who knows how big this is, something to keep an eye on.

I’ve never been one for paying players, but I do think college athletes should be able to profit off their likeness. If Lindell Wiggington wants to make $10,000 doing a commercial for a local car dealership why should the NCAA be able to stop him. It wouldn’t cost the University any money.

Very interesting. I suppose it'll take a few to do it and see what happens the following year in terms of draft placement (meaning, did this exposure help them or would playing for a final four team help more, etc).

I also think for someone that may have academic issues/concerns, this also could be an easier path. I would also assume the tie to the NBA via the G League would help vs going to make money elsewhere.

On the other hand, the #49 best player that "duds" out and took the G-League offer...are they then out of luck after flopping in one year of the G League (take their $125k and that's it)? Where in college they would have had 4 years to improve, etc.

It does, but they will then have to go after those kids and then everyone else will be moved down a slot.

I think college coaching has got to be better than gleague right?

Coaching for most of these kids is the least worry. It's going to be all about the $$$, and it's going to be in the open. The top coaches that get "one-and-done" recruits basically know not to get in the kids way.

Maybe head coaches, but I’d imagine being in an nba s & c program a year early would be beneficial. Personal trainers in the g-league are likely better than college.

Starts summer 2019, curious if there is a trickle effect for the next couple classes. Foster is the only guy that might be good enough if he climbs a little bit but I doubt he’ll do it.

Blue bloods might be going after lower ranked prospects more than before.
The real problem i foresee... what happens when a 5 star decides to not go to (Duke, KU, or UK) and frees up a late scholly? You might see them try and poach. They aren’t going to bank a scholly. That is bad news for a team like ISU.

Might depend on the quality of the organization, too. Most NBA teams have a G-League affiliate now - there's like three or four that don't - but not every developmental program is equal. Some organizations put more resources into the development of their G-League players.

You honestly can't see how that would cause recruiting advantages?

I'm wondering if there's some kind of time window for registering for the G-league. Like before the NBA draft or something like that. I'm not sure you can really do anything to prevent the poaching of players, though. It happens even now.

It's not that I deny it would create recruiting advantages, it's that I don't care that it does. A person should be able to profit from their own likeness. I don't really care about the repercussions for college sports.

Beyond that, there are already plenty of recruiting advantages that power schools have. Many players are already getting paid under the table. Letting players wet their beak isn't going to change anything that dramatically.
