Friday OT - Computer Personality

I love android devices but a windows pc has always been a chore when forced to use it. Mac OS since late 90s.

Exception is obviously for gamers but I’ve always been a console gamer.

I wouldn’t pay extra to have an iPhone vs an android phone. I only have an iPhone because wife demands it to sync more easily. I definitely would and have paid extra to use mac os vs windows.

Dumped Apple for Android years ago. Use four Samsung Chromebooks that I paid around $125/ for at Walmart. They just work.

macOS > Windows for me. I like that it keeps things simple but still allows some granular control through Terminal when I need it.

Not to say that I completely avoid Windows. I used to upgrade my MacBook every few years until I built my gaming PC. So my current MacBook is probably close to 10 years old at this point. I want to replace it but will probably end up buying a Mac mini that I can sit at my desk and hook up to a KVM between it and my PC tower. One computer for productivity (Mac) and one computer for leisure (PC).

I really have no need for a laptop at this point ever since smart phones and tablets have become more ubiquitous.

I find laptop handy for sitting up in bed surfing the web and serving as PC whilst on the road

All of the above. Use Win, Mac, Linux at home. Anything and everything at work.

I have been a Windows user my whole life, but edit a lot of photos. Every review I read says that Macs are better for it, so I recently got a MacBook.

…I love it, now that I have figured out the file structure. I may never go back.

Are you a PC or a Mac? Linux, other?
I've been a Mac user forever. It was difficult in the beginning because a lot of stuff, like videos and certain games, wasn't compatible with a Mac unless you downloaded different video players. It seems like I needed three or four different video players in those early days, but now that's not the case anymore with the newer Macs. And I just think a Mac is way more intuitive than any Windows OS. Also, they switched us to PCs at work several years ago, and it was a difficult transition for me to get used to the right click, left click thing. it felt like an unnatural hand position for me.

I'd be more interested to know if people are a laptop or desktop fan. I tried a laptop and I just hate the finger pad mouse control on a laptop. I use a desktop Mac exclusively. I rarely use my phone to look up stuff unless I'm away from my desktop.

I did get a MagicMouse for my MacBook! I don’t love fingerpads, especially for precise editing work.

The MagicMouse can be a bit troublesome. Mine just quits working sometimes, and I have to fiddle with it to get it working again. This is a relatively new MagicMouse. My previous one quit working altogether. When I ordered this computer, I really didn't want a MagicMouse because of that experience, but it was the only option available. I also don't like that when you plug it in to recharge it, you disable the mouse and can't use it. They need to make it so you can use it while charging, like the keyboard.

One of the neat features of a Mac is the keyboard shortcut to take a photo. If you press Command, shift, 3, you can take a screen shot that downloads to your desktop. If you press Command, shift, 4 it brings up a crosshairs that you can then use to draw a square or rectangle around the section you want a picture of and it will load it to your desktop. I find myself using the latter option quite a bit.

I was pc forever, but bought a Mac against my will in 2012 and never looked back. After supporting pcs all day at work I enjoy the simplicity of Mac’s at home. Just bought a new iMac to replace our 2012 machine this week. My boys have pcs which they game on so I still have my exposure, but have really bought into apples ecosystem throughout the home. Even my AppleTV gives me joy as I’m laying in bed I can just pop on my AirPods and they seemlessly connect so my wife doesn’t have to listen to my shows as she sleeps.

Honestly, the way they have built an entire ecosystem is amazing. And how you can connect everything. When I was debating getting the MacBook (as my old laptop was in dire need of updating), I thought about how nice it would be to text, locate the kids, stream things from it to other devices, etc.,it is just seamless. Now I just need @Mr Janny to get an iPhone instead of Android so we can communicate easier (and he stops screwing up group chats).

@Bipolarcy - the MagicMouse charging port on the bottom really annoys me, too! I wish it were on the front nose of it.

My last job switched over to mac in about 2010, and my new job is all mac. I use a mac for everything except gaming which I have a purpose built PC. Mac is just so much easier for everything and the hardware lasts 4x. I am typing this on a 2011 macbook pro.

Except the apple TV remote is just terrible. The new ones are better, but still.

I’m used to them, they are easier to lose for sure but overall I don’t have a problem with them functionally.

I predate home computers altogether. :D

However, my first work computer that wasn't a keypunch or a dumb terminal was an Apple III, and we bought an Apple IIe+ for home which jived with my work computer. When my department switched over to PCs (Gateway was the PC of choice back then) I bought one of those for home use as my II2+ was pretty much becoming obsolete. I've stuck with PCs ever since, and since I started with Windows, I've stuck with Windows. My browser of choice has changed over the years, though.

I've only been Windows both at work and at home. But have only owned IPhones so the interconnenction issues seem to be getting worse. I keep telling myself I should get the Apple laptop or tablet but then I see the price and don't jump.

Just got a new laptop with W11 and stuff seems more bloaty than ever. Can't even get it to allow me to run the Firefox download since it doesn't come from the Microsoft App store. Just seems really weirdly set up and needlessly different (worse) than W10.
I'm using Windows 11 and Firefox on both my desktop & my laptop...

It really is just so seamless. And having now edited a large number of photos on it - it is built well and efficient. My laptop would take 30 seconds to open a photo from one program into another, while the MacBook does it almost instantaneously. The laptop was only about five, six years old.
