Friday OT: A game to remember

I was in Boston in 1997 for my job and I was single. I was at a downtown bar watching the Iowa State-Wyoming debacle. A girl started talking to me. She was with a group of friends. She invited me back to their hotel. She had a boyfriend and then had second thoughts of...you know... and I ended up leaving the hotel and going back to my hotel where I slept alone.
I believe that was the first OT game in ISU history. And something else incredible happened in world news that night. Without Googling, what was it?

EDIT: My Bad! First OT game was Wyoming in '96! Sorry!

The Wyoming OT game was 1996.

There was a world news event the night of the 1997 opener against OSU.
Yeah. They got crushed at Wyoming. The only other thing I remember about that night was I seem to remember a Tyson fight. I could be wrong

Edit: nope

The weekend before my wedding, I was in person for "the run" by Seneca at the Jack.

The very next saturday (wedding day) was the beatdown at OU and we were never the same that year. I watched part of that game in a sports bar on the way to my wedding reception.

We hadn't beaten the Hawks for 15 years, so I decided to go into work and catch up on some things. This was at Principal, so we're talking big building and only me and one other guy there who was several levels above me as I was just starting out. We started chatting and got some calls that ISU was winning at halftime. Went to a bar downtown to watch the second half and get **** faced.

I've had several other instances where traveling for work and meeting up at an alumni watch in whatever city I'm in and always had a good time. TT game where Jared Barnett threw for 400 yards was one that sticks out when I was in Indianapolis randomly.

I'll add to the list of wedding examples ... I can connect several weddings/receptions I attended. I can pinpoint the date by checking ISU game dates. (I otherwise might have no clear recollection of precise timeline).

Most memorable, as far as the game itself: ISU-OSU ’11, work colleague was getting married the next day. He was having a “last night as bachelor” revelry; I was watching at home. He had started watching the game at his place. He called me after the game, said, “You gotta come over,” a bit on the slurry side … I declined; I had no business driving at that point, I was a bit buzzed myself. :)

A minor cloud inside the victory’s silver lining: At the wedding reception, someone stole my winter coat, a dressy one I had gotten the previous Christmas. At least I suspect it was stolen -- we searched everywhere at the facility - no luck. It couldn't have walked away on its own. I guess that was the trade-off for the major upset!

At least two other weddings I associate with ISU FB games, but both were losses, so I’ll save those stories for later.

This is a crazy one.

The 2010 win @ Texas. I was in KC as a groomsman in a wedding. We had the 11am game on in the hotel room as we were getting ready. Meanwhile the bride calls off the wedding mere hours before the ceremony. All our buddies come over with cases of beer to console our friend. I'm the only ISU fan of the group and trying to keep back my joy at the game unfolding. Once the game ended I had to sneak out in the stairwell to cheer and call an ISU friend to talk about the game. I was basically Willy Mays Hays in Major League after he survived the cuts.

We still ended up having the wedding reception that night because it was all paid for. It all ended up great because my buddy dodged the crazy girl and is now happily married to someone better. I will never forget that Cyclone game.
2010 win @ Texas was on the day I moved back to Iowa

Pretty sure it was Princess Diane dying.

I just remember it being in the news that weekend.

ISU jumped out to a lead and then lost which was NOT new.

September 30, 2017. My father was a diabetic and had hyponatremia (low sodium blood levels). My mom could not wake up my father in the morning and was rushed to the local ICU. He did come out of his coma while I prepared to fly down to be with him. Things turned for the worse and he passed away on October 6, 2017.

Needless to say I was a mess. He was THE person in the family that I could always talk with whenever I needed someone. I can't remember what I was doing that Saturday but I did turn on the tv. Flipping through the channels I stumbled upon the Iowa State/Oklahoma game in Norman. The game gave me a diversion from everything I was feeling about my dad's death. The win gave me hope that things would eventually be okay.

My avatar is a pendant of a father/son holding hands. I bought this after his funeral.

The Cole Netten walk off FG against Iowa I missed because my dad was so fed up with the first half he decided to golf instead. We were towards the end of our round when he got a text the Clones won

Hercle Ivy scorching the nets against Yugoslavia during a time when a high school guy like me could get down into the student section (parquet, and rightly so). It was great!

A double-negative memory: Nov. 30, 2019, I was in the hospital for a minor (but unforeseen) procedure, took place the afternoon before the ISU at KSU game. Had to stay overnight. I thought, “Well, at least I have something to look forward to after the surgery!”

Game was almost worse than the procedure … at least I was unconscious for that. :D

I have an especially sour memory of that game, but might not have resonated as much if I didn’t associate it with a hospital-stay.

There’s an amusing side-moment from the experience, but probably too tl;dr to make it worthwhile.

The last ever Big 8 tournament game. I had to travel to Baltimore for work. Last minute I threw my Iowa State Sweatshirt in the bag. Got to the hotel and turned on the TV for a few minutes and learned ISU had won it earlier in the day that Sunday. Threw on the sweatshirt for the informal icebreaker that afternoon and it/me even showed up in the wrap up photo collage on the last day. Cardinal and Gold are not subtle - they eye always goes there!
