Friday OT #2 - Crossing Genres

I still love Garbage, LOVE the Cranberries, and one of my favorites of all time is Natalie Merchant solo and with 10k. She is crazy talented.

Oh, gosh, to clarify - I mean before that. I'd put all of those acts into the "alternative" category, or Garbage would be grunge.

I'm talking more about the Gloria Estefan/Mariah Carey/Celine Dion/Amy Grant pop princesses who were there just before grunge exploded.

I was in a musical rut lately - I have a wide variety of genres I enjoy, but I find myself listening to the same few types while I work or do things. Rolling Stone published an updated version of their "Top 500 Albums of All TIme" a few years ago - a friend had listened to the whole old list, so I decided to listen to the updated list. I started at 500, and am only to 476, but there are a wide variety of music genres. I find myself still liking the same basic ones primarily (indie, rap/hip hop, classic rock, jazz, early punk), and disliking the same (hard metal, country), but have found some exceptions.

What are your musical tastes? What genres do you like and dislike?
It all varies on my mood and who I'm with, what I'm doing.

Maybe it's easier to list what I DON'T listen to...
  • Christian
  • Metal
  • Jazz
  • Classical
  • Ska
  • Jam bands
  • Opera
  • New country (90s and 00s are my sweet spot)
  • EDM

About the only things I really don't like are Bro Country - I don't mind classic country and actually like old western music - and a lot of the rap that has come out in the last 20 years. Oh, and I'm not a fan of the really hard metal stuff.

Other than that I'll listen to just about anything. I do admit to some of the recent pop stuff that my daughter plays constantly getting on my nerves after a while.

The other day I put on some classical guitar while washing the dishes. But when on a long road trip to and around Iowa a couple of weeks ago I had classic album rock on all weekend. I'll listen to stuff from the '60s, '70s, '80s and '90s the most but will mix in some '50s, '00s and '10s as well and even on occasion will listen to some stuff from before that.

This. Honestly, who listens to this?

What is bro country?

I also like a variety of music. The decade though that I'm just not a fan of is the 70's It's just not for me.

I struggle with 1980s and 1990s country music. The stuff I like that's more modern has a heavier bluegrass influence.
Also not a fan of the super pop that came out of the 90s and 2000s.

I don't listen to jazz often but occasionally I'll find something that hits just right. The randomness of it makes it hard for me to like. I don't mind jam bands, and enjoy it when they find their groove, but endless noodling isn't for me.

I can enjoy anything except country. Typically lean towards hard rock and metal, but depends on what I'm doing and the mood. Different choices for working out vs romance.

Country music is the greatest challenge to the first amendment and freedom of expression.

At this exact moment, if I had to pick favorites it's Nightwish or Body Count. If I had to pick a least favorite it's Lee Greenwood.

I HATE Whitney Houston and Cher from that timeframe. Which might be surprising.

I had debated on including Whitney as I know she can be really divisive. But I totally agree on both!

i really struggle with "country", but admittedly like Alt-country (uncle tupelo, jayhawks, Wilco, Ryan Adams, Drive By Truckers).
there is just something about the country "sound" that I find off-putting. Sturgill Simpson is a great example. i know i should like him, but his voice just says country and I can't get past it. Jason Isbell is very much on the line. His vocals don't sound as country, so he is getting a little lee-way at my house (he is a good follow on Twitter).

Country music is my favorite and I am not talking about today's "douche country" as CW calls it I like more of the older stuff that actually sounds more like country and not pop music.

After that 80's and 90's pop music that actually has a good tune and lyrics you can sing to and some of the rap music from that era too. Then some of the older rock or southern rock music from the 70's through 90's. I am just not much of a fan of a lot of the newer stuff that has come out since about 2010 of most genres that have too much techno/auto-tune/generic sound to it. I've gotten into some of Chris Stapleton's music and I think Eric Church does a good job of making music that doesn't sound too mainstream for the most part.

I usually listen to that whole umbrella of pop-punk punk rock or emo pop. Then EDM. And lately really getting into Jazz. I like rap but don't usually listen to it on the regular.

I grew up in the '60s so it's interesting to hear people referring to '90s music as "old" and differentiating between 00 music and 2010 music. The Black Keys are getting to be old music but I like them. Charlie Crocker was on TV the other day and I like him. Tedeschi-Trucks Band is really good. The country on the radio is so fake. Fake accents, fake points of view. I doubt they even like country music themselves. Mostly I like old music: Old country, classic rock, old blues, old jazz like Art Pepper, early R&B. Bob Dylan had an online show years ago and someone wrote in to ask why he played so much old music. He said "Well there's a lot more of it."

Classics = 20 years in radio terms so Backstreet Boys and stuff are turning classic around now.

Top 3 Artists where I have listened to the complete discographies multiple times
- Kanye
- Linkin Park
- Carrie Underwood (haven't kept up with this one)

Also:
2000s alt rock/punk. Aaron Lewis is a top 5 singing talent ever.

I like some EDM stuff, but generally can't stand full on dubstep. RIP my subwoofer if a song comes on.

i dislike the "real country" artists more than the bro country because their noses are stuck so high in the air. I don't see how bro country is any different than party rap lol. It's for fun, not meant to be taken seriously.

Edit: To clarify, still prefer the actual "real" country music when it comes on, just think the bro country hate is pointless.
