Fran Mccaffrey

Um no. Not sure how good Fran will do at Iowa (I actually think he is being setup to fail because he is not a "big-name" coach) but I don't think there is a BCS program out there that doesn't rhyme with Schmabraska that we can consider having the upper-hand on...

Good, solid hire IMO. I know he's not a "sexy" name, but he brings substance and not just style to Iowa.

And I don't know if ISU has the "upper hand" in anything basketball related. As long as McD keeps on losing players at the rate he has, we won't be having the "upper hand" in anything basketball related against the Hawks or UNI or even Drake, much less the rest of the Big 12.

I'm not sure what separates McCaffery from Lick. Maybe recruiting ties?

Anwyways, my point is that he has a good resume, just like Lick did. It's tough to tell how well he's going to do, but they could have done a lot worse.

As long as Greg McDermott is at ISU, it's hard to say we have the upper hand though.

Major difference: style of play. It's easier to recruit guys to an up-tempo game, and he also has 11 years as an assistant at a BCS school. So he knows a little about what it takes to recruit in the BCS, something Lick never did.

Maybe completely different style of play?

I'd figured Lick had spent some time at a BCS program.

When we were hearing rumors about McDermott being fired, I was thinking our best coaching prospect would be a guy having success at a mid-major, who had major conference assistant experience.

I honestly don't see his style of play working unless he can do a HUGE upgrade in recruiting. For a run and gun style to work against a physical slow it down league you have to be able to blow it wide open. With their current roster I don't see that happening for at least 3 years after some new recruits get in and get some playing time.

Style of play. Apparently Frannie likes to run and gun while Lickliter was zzzzzzzzzzzz...

I agree with Jon Miller. This hire is very "meh."

I guess if anything it should be more fun to watch.

So, I know none of us are Hawkeye fans, but what do people think about the hire? Will Iowa State still have the upper hand?

Some sqaukeye superfan who calls himself storminspunk wants Barta immediately fired. fitting form for a sqauak.

Did you expect Bruce Pearl? Iowa simply wasn't going to get a successful coach from another BCS conference program. Honestly, this seems a Rhoads-esque hire. Not a big name, but a guy with a good resume who is pretty well connected and knows his head from his ***. He fits the exact profile I wanted if McD got canned here. He probably won't ever make Iowa elite, but I think he'll make them competitive.

who made wolfman the omniscient one??

If they expect him to run and gun with the guys they have they are going to be sorely disappointed. They were all recruited to play Lick's style-this is not going to be a quick fix Hawk fans

The good thing about basketball (unlike football which takes years) is it only takes a couple of good players to get it turned around. Freshman can make a immediate impact and get this thing going in the right direction. It was rumored that a top flight point guard was heading to Sieana until he Fran took off, maybe Iowa now gets a look if he qualifies.

Well they sure as hell didnt do a very good job playing that style. Maybe a brand new style well give them a better chance.

I thought this was a thread on the former Denver Bronco's WR.
Can you run a new style with the players that Iowa has now? If I remember right there were a few players on the team that had trouble running the court last year.

This might clear things up a bit.

The Short(est) List: Fran McCaffery - Black Heart Gold Pants

It seems like Siena ran more of an [name redacted]-like motion offense as opposed to the run-n-gun that Davis employed. Either way, it'll be more fun to watch than desperation heaves from 3 at the end of the shot clock.
