Heading down to Ft. Myers, FL today for a little vacation. Wanted to see if anyone has any recommendations to see, do, or places to eat. Thanks for any help you can provide.

My daughter lives there and I have visited twice. Last Christmas time and a month ago. On this recent trip the Lake O had to release more fresh water due to the high lake elevation. This caused a huge algae bloom on the beaches. We went further down to naples and it wasn't so bad or as bad there. Places to eat. Ford's Garage downtown, Cristophes on McGregor Blvd and Skip One(Spicy Shrimp. We ate 2 pounds last time) south on 41, right side of the road is where we have ate several times. Skip one looks like a dive, but the food makes up for it. Do go shelling on Sanibel. Checks the low tide times for sure. ENJOY!!! PS Take spf 50000 if ya burn easy like I DID.

I vacation on Captiva every year and I agree with the previous posters who said to visit Sanibel (and/or Captiva) if you want a relaxing day on the beach. The beaches are very shallow so when the water is clear you can take a snorkel and find a lot of interesting shells and sea creatures out in the water. There is a lot of wildlife and it is not uncommon to see dolphins and manatees.

A few nice little restaurants/pubs on Sanibel....Or rent bikes--trails around the island. There is a dive indoor/outdoor bar at the tip of Captiva many go to watch the sunset every evening...very nice...easy drive

--also we visited the Thomas Edison/Henry Ford winter estates (next to each other in Ft Meyers)....easy parking. We had a couple hours to burn on our way to the airport. Interesting with a couple small museums, with an out-building that housed Edison's lab

If your into nature hikes Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary is cool. Two mile boardwalk through cypress swamps. Depending on where you're at in Ft. Myers it could be a bit of a drive, but should be able to get there in an hour.

Sanibel Island is pretty amazing. If you have time, I would definitely recommend going deep sea fishing. They have boats that will take you out for a day; last time I went the guy next to me caught a small shark. If you do this though, I would highly recommend taking some medication to prevent sea sickness

Wife and I just got back 2 weeks ago from a week in a beachhouse. The north end of Ft Myers Beach is a fun little area with shops and restaurants and bikinis. Lots of rentals and we stand-upped paddle boarded and rented kayaks. Also parasailed.

There's a restaurant called Docks we go to every time on the beach that does a great pizza and cold beer. It's at the southern end of the island but nothing is more than a 10 minute drive on the main beach road. Sanibel and Captiva always nice and the sand is a little softer, water a little clearer. They had LOTS of rain just before we got there and the lake (Okachobee I think?) drained lots of sediment clouding the water a bit. We went down to the everglades and did an airboat tour and saw lots of manatees, alligators, etc... Also did a sunset cruise out of sanibel and saw lot more manatees and dolphins, birds etc... Rented bikes for the week and did lots of beach cruising. Also echo the no-see-ums but we were only bit during our daily beech walks after dark.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Will be sure to check some of them out. Just grabbed a bite at a little Mexican place La Casita and it was really good. May have been the drinks beforehand but the wet burrito was delicious.
