whats the story with this ames QB sam straub? he any good? i'm guessing walk-on?

He goes to a lot of spring practices, and the staff talks to him a lot. Right now he doesn't have any offers but he's getting a lot better.

Cyclone Nation is sort of prepping for the possibility of a rough year if the offense doesn't get it in gear quick. However, when I look beyond this season, and some of the higher profile recruits that are taking serious looks at ISU, I can't help but feel really good about where the program can be in 2-3 more years.

I feel really good about where it is right now--especially the offense.

cool. thanks for the info. i was reading that he was pretty good and is a die hard clone fan. i'm sure he ends up in cardinal & gold

Right now he's just trying to get a scholarship from someone. He's going to Colorado State this weekend for a visit. If he gets an offer from Iowa State he'd be a Cyclone barring a Bama offer or something.

Didn't we have one of the worst offenses in the big 12 again last year??

Key words highlighted for emphasis.

I'm not expecting the #1 offense this year, but let's face it, last year we saw 3 QB's play...the only one who matters is the guy that started Kansas, WVU and the bowl game. From what I saw of that young Mr. Richardson, and the fact we will have 2 very good TE along with some green but talented WR's and MANY options at RB...well, I just don't see a repeat of last year at all.

Defense will most likely be a struggle - but hey, stranger things have happened than a Wally Burnham defense clicking on day one.

Going to be a fun year.

I expect at least a big improvement on OLine technique. If we can see some sustained blocks, we will have much more success. Our offense I think is dependent on how much our WR's step up next season. If we can get some quality production out of them and consistancy, our RBs will look as good as they are. Out backs get a bad rap because the defenses often stack the line not giving them much of a chance to break through. If Sam can threaten them with the pass game, we can do great things. But once again, if the line doesn't get their act together, there is no chance of either.

this is the key to ISU having an offense that puts points up. back in the last 90's and early 00's - ISU had a solid line every year and was able to put a lot of points up and rack up yards. The past few years the line play has been not subpar.

So we are expecting the offense to be better because we have a returning QB that played well in two games and overlooking the fact we are breaking in sevearl new linemen and WRs? I'd love to see the offense get clicking this year, but I don't have my hopes up.

SR can at least complete the deep ball. That is a big improvement.

We are not breaking in several new linemen. The only one without significant starting experience was slated to be a starter prior to injuries.

I do worry about Sam's ability to throw a quick bullet pass. Seems everything Sam throws is a touch pass. I am hoping he can put some velocity on it when we need 15 yard passes into traffic areas (Center of field or quick outs/ins)

I don't. CPR said that both quarterbacks can throw every pass they need to in his offense. That's good enough for me.
