Food for Thought at Miami

This week, Oklahoma State hired away the Miami defensive coordinator. Believe his name is Williams, and he is a former Cowboy player, and a grad. Well, according to espn, the Miami coach issued a statement saying in so many words, "I will look for the best new coordinator I can find, and if I can't find one, I'll just take on those (DC) responsibilities myself."

Huh, a head coach who casually says he'll serve as defensive coordinator himself if he doesn't find the right candidate. Could that same thought be in Paul Rhoads's head now?

They hired Bill Young who is a very good d-coordinator he was at Miami for one year and at KU the year before that. He was the reason that KU had really good defenses for those years before Reesing showed up and the year they went 11-1. I was really glad he left KU and it showed this year with how bad their d got. OSU already has a great offense now bringing in Young will really improve their D and make their team even better.

I don't like the idea of a brand new HC taking on the responsibilites of the DC. Can you imagine how much worse of a game-day coach Chizik would have been if he was also the DC?

I also heard that OSU lured him away from Miami with $700,000. That's alot for a DC. That used to be head coach $ a few years ago.

I like Young, but he was great at stopping the run. Not so great at stopping the pass, actually if you look at the stats while he was at KU their defense was terrible against the pass. That 12-1 season worked out nice because the only team they played that year that had a really good passing offense was Missouri and Missouri beat them pretty easily.

True I just got back from Okie and they had an article in the paper and it mentioned how much they were offering him. Personally I would have stayed at The U, but thats just me.

I heard the KC radio guys on 810 mention what Okie State was paying their defensive coordinator and couldn't believe it. Has the price for coordinators gone up drastically this winter? If so is that what is delaying our hiring of a DC? I believe I read somewhere that Auburn was paying Roof-sp somewhere in the 400,000 plus range. I believe Bolt was making about 275K.

$700k for an assistant coach.

I guess having T. Boone Pickens as a booster does help a little bit.

Also consider that Gundy at times doesn't even watch his defense play in order to diagram his offensive plan for the next series. Thus, OSU's demand for a quality D-coordinator is higher than other schools where the head coach helps out more with the defense. Bill Young, as others have stated, is an absolutely top notch defensive coach.
