Interesting Daily article with "hit tape" designer Dani Varley.

Five questions for the 'hit tape' architect - Inside Iowa State for faculty and staff - Iowa State University

"The term “hit tapeâ€￾ actually came from the Dan McCarney era. The football video coordinator would create the hit tape as a motivational video for the team to see the night before the game. We stumbled across them two years ago."

"It's nice to get positive feedback on something you worked so hard to do. It's fun to see people's responses, like 'it gave me goosebumps,' or 'it brought me to tears.' A lot of the criticism comes from the choice of music. I like to switch it up, week to week. Sometimes it's an instrumental, sometimes it's a rock song with lyrics. It's hard to please everyone, because everyone has different taste in music."

I think the hit tapes have improved greatly from last year to this year. I look forward to them every week.

Yup every Friday night after our team meeting and right before we had to head to our hotel rooms we would watch the hit tape.

whoever drummed up the plan for the homecoming hittape should be given free CLONE CONES for life... favorite one in a long time

How did the McCarney era ones compare to what we see now?

They improved greatly in the early years, but disappointed at the end.

<sorry, had to>

*edit, now that I click the link, the first of MY five questions would have been 'how you doin?'

To my surprise, I was expecting this thread to have many more comments like this

She says in the article that she had that idea for awhile.

[h=3]How long does it take to do a hit tape, start to finish?[/h]I have a lot of other responsibilities -- football isn't the only sport we're covering -- so it happens throughout the week. Some weeks, I definitely have an idea of what we want to do -- like the homecoming video -- but it really depends on what the team does the Saturday before.
And guys, behave. She is my girlfriend.

She just doesn't know it.

I did actually date her! And she DID know it!

Great point and fun to read because I just laugh to myself at all the people who groan week to week about music choice and clamor for it the next. People just need to realize some of us like Alternative, Rock, Metal, Rap, Instrumental, etc...I am glad that the hit tapes find a way to mix it up. I like a certain genre best myself but would absolutely HATE if all 12+ hit tapes came with that same type of music. They really do a great job.

Kinda sad.... we did these in HS over 20 years ago for fb. And a goal tape for soccer.... boy oh how far isu has come in the last 6 years.

I dont know if they still do it, but I imagine that they do, but they used to show them to the recruits before the game in the meeting room. I know they did when McCarney was here and pretty sure when Chiz was here also.

It's really not that different from recruits putting together their highlight tapes for recruiting. Which has been going on for years.

I do however appreciate the fact they go through the trouble to put them together and share with the rest of us.

I do miss the McCarney tapes as well.

Given how many people anxiously await the release of a tape containing plays they have already likely seen several times, she is doing a great job. Very impressive work.
