I have a brick fire pit without a top. I know some cities require you to have a top. any idea what the requirements for Des Moines/ Urbandale are? Yes I live in town.

Unless one of your neighbors call the police, or if the fire is visible from the street, I think the likelihood that you actually get in trouble for this is pretty slim.

If you have a decent size fire by and stretch I would imagine there is a good chance you will get called in. I do volunteer fire in a smaller town and we get complaints all the time that aren't really valid concerns.

It's pretty easy to smell when things are burning. I'd guess that if you use a fire pit regularly you're going to get caught.

Living in Iowa City, we've had plenty of backyard fires like this and have never had a problem. Maybe we've just been lucky. We also always talked to the neighbors before we had our little parties so that they'd be aware, and so if we got out-of-hand, they could call us rather than the PD/FD.

Just keep some hot dogs out there and tell them it's a cookout.

Just whatever you do don't use gasoline to light it...I've been on two of those call already this year.
