How do you know that play calling is the problem? How do you know it isn't execution that is the problem?

Plays are being called that don't suit this offense well. We don't have an accurate QB, and we're running an offense that requires accuracy. There needed to be more options, reads, and short routes.

If your Big XII QB is under throwing a WR that is 15 yards downfield by >5 yards, something needs to change, and changing the QB wasn't an option, so the play calling should have changed.

At least twice. I'd call that too many times. The play calling wasn't conducive to the offenses (few) strengths.

Maybe I am missing something here, but to me it doesnt seem like the problem is our play calling. It is our QB play. I lost count of how many lob passes Barnett attempted and failed on.

Why Barnett is throwing 30+ attempts per game is perplexing to me. Someone used the square peg into a round hole analogy and it is perfect for him. He loved to run the zone read with Jantz who was a better passer, and now he wants to throw with Barnett who is a better runner (and tends to run the zone read more successfully).

Play-calling has been suspect all year and it has been telling, against Iowa, Tech, somewhat against KSU, and today against OSU.

Why did the first drive work so well? It was scripted. He had a whole week to craft a good drive. After that, OSU made adjustments and his play-calling was terrible most of the time. Poor execution didn't help anything at all, but an offensive coordinator needs to be able to put his players in a position to succeed.

Yes, our offense has problems with the O-line, QB, and WR positions. But we have serviceable players if you mold your offense to fit their form.

Only answer is a new OC.

It's everything guys. It isn't one thing. Mess is not getting it done, QB play is horrible, the line play is bad, the receivers are not great. It is all around crap.

This was one of the most unenjoyable games I have watched in years. Becuase we had no hope. There was no hope once OSU got the lead.

People have been calling for the heads of our OC's for many years now. Prior to Wally, everyone wanted our DC's to be fired perpetually.

During that entire time span, we've been near the basement in recruiting virtually every year. Maybe there is a correlation.

Maybe they should change system. The ISU spread offense has been pretty bad for a while.

For some reason he chooses to open the playbook the first drive, and if we score, the rest of the game it is:

1st down - read option
2nd down - bubble screen
3rd down - random pass
REPEAT

It's his first year as OC. That's like saying Iowa should fire Greg Davis. It's their first season as OC. Give it another year or 2, if it's still as bad then yes.

I'm not even calling for his head, but it's fair to say that their execution has something to do with the coaching they receive.

This isn't little league football, learning on the fly in the top conference top to bottom is not ideal, and CPR may have set Mess up to fail in this spot. O-line is no good now that our NFL pick has left, that is another coach that is cutting his teeth in the big leagues. Then on D you have several coaches that have big-league experience, and it shows.

I'll give mess 3 years. Hopefully in that time we'll be able to get a qb that can execute. The plays were there, but jb missed a lot of throws. Those that he made the receivers were dropping. It is painful to watch our offense. We lack a qb, plain and simple. Give mess Seneca Wallace and wed be scoring left and right. Coaching stability will lead to better things. I don't want a new system every year, and I want a guy who will stick with us for awhile.

I wish Barnetty threw 30 passes in the game, problem is he threw 28 in the first half!!!

Mess has improved greatly as the season has progressed. But he cant make Barnett not miss the reciever by ten yards. Or make the recievers not have stone hands.

Execution is horrible obviously. But he isn't putting the players in a position to succeed. Barnett should not be attempting that many throws. Way too many 3rd and longs. I realize the ol play has been weak, but we seem to abandon the run immediately after some success.
