Favorite Song Lyrics

As far as the hard rock genre would go, mine would be a tie between:

1. Mad Season - River of Deceit
2. Tool - Right in Two
3. Something else I can't think of at the moment.

Open your eyes
I'm a coward too
You don't need to hide, my friend
For I am just like you

Skrillex - Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites

My current favorite lyric. It'll change next week.

Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit - Codeine

If there's one thing I can't take
It's the sound that a woman makes
about 5 seconds after her heart begins to break
well that's one thing I can't take

Great, great song.

My favorite Isbell line:

"There ain't much difference 'tween the man I wanna be and the man that I really am"

also up there

"Don't call what you're wearin' an 'outfit'. Don't ever say your car is broke. Don't sing with a fake British accent. Don't act like your family's a joke."

Mad Season - underrated. Layne Staley was the man.

I'm a big fan of the "slower" songs; I can't help it.

I was dressed for success
But success it never comes
And I'm the only one who laughs at your jokes when they are so bad
And your jokes are always bad
-Pavement

I've been thinking about you, so how can you sleep
These people aren't your friends, they're paid to kiss your feet
But they don't know what I know, and why should you care
When I'm not there
- Radiohead

I know someday you'll have a beautiful life
I know you'll be the sun
In somebody else's sky, but why can't it be mine?
- Pearl Jam

Love both of those, but for me, nothing Isbell beats Danko/Manuel.

I ain't living like I should.
A little rest might do me good.
Got to sinking in the place where I once stood.
Now I ain't living like I should.

Can you hear that singing? Sounds like gold.
Maybe I can only hear it in my head.
Fifteen years ago we owned that road
now it's rolling over us instead.

I know I'm weird, but Summerteeth is my favorite.

I think half the songs on Summerteeth are some of Wilco's best ever, and half the songs bore me to tears.

Love both of those, but for me, nothing Isbell beats Danko/Manuel.

Danko/Manuel is one of my least favorite Isbell/DBT songs from a musical standpoint, but the lyrics are great. Looking at the arc of Jason's career, it seems like a direct snapshot into his mind.

Not to derail the thread, but did any of you DBT fans know that Shonna Tucker left the band last week? Kinda surprised me, but kinda didn't at the same time. I really like her vocals, and her songs on the last two albums aren't bad at all (I couldn't stand her songs on Brighter Than Creation's Dark).

I wasn't terribly surprised. It's really Cooley's and Patterson's band. I think everybody else is replacable. The only song of Shonna's that I thought was worth a damn was You Got Another from The Big To-Do. Every other one left no impression on me.

Back on topic:

Lucero - What Else Would You Have Me Be

I take you out at night
Buy you cigarettes and whisky drinks
Always end up in some fight
Ain't that the way good loves gotta be?

"Last night I slept with my boots on again;
One cut on my forehead, and one on my chin
On the hard old floor; with nothing to cover up with

You got me real good girl, and I must admit
You pack a pretty mean punch, for such a pretty little dish
And its a shame to know most folks don't ever know love like this"

Love Like This - Drive-By Truckers

Where were you when the world stopped turning? - Alan Jackson
"Faith, hope, and love are the 3 things he gave us, and the greatest is love"

Soldiers and Jesus - James Otto
"God only knows where we'd be without soldiers and Jesus"

Remember the Name - Fort Minor
"This is ten percent luck, twenty percent skill, Fifteen percent concentrated power of will, Five percent pleasure, fifty percent pain, And a hundred percent reason to remember the name"

Also, any song by Josh Turner, Brad Paisley, or Chris Young
I could go on and on..

I haven't loved anything they have done since Isbell left...

"I hope I cut myself shaving tomorrow, I hope it bleeds all day long,
Our friends say it's darkest before the sun rises,
We're pretty sure they're all wrong."
The Mountain Goats, No Children

"she's got a cross around her neck that she ripped off from a schoolgirl in the subway on a visit to the city. she likes how it looks on her chest with three open buttons." The Hold Steady, Cattle and Creeping Things

"This is the place where time reverses, dead man talk to all the pretty nurses,
Instruments shine on the silver tray, don't let me get carried away."
Elliott Smith, Kings Crossing

Haven't read the whole thread, so I don't know if it's been posted, but mine is:

"Living is easy with eyes closed, misunderstanding all you see."

-The Beatles, "Strawberry Fields Forever"
