Favorite Cover Songs

Definitely one of my least favorite Beatles performances. Paul just seems off-key on their version.

This is quite different. Phil Spector produced doo-wop-ish version. I like it...

RHCP cover of Higher Ground by Stevie Wonder
Van Halen's cover of You Really Got Me by The Kinks

And my all time favorite:

Austin Lounge Lizards - Pink Floyd's "Brain Damage" just because it's so unexpected.

This was originally released by Jimmy Radcliffe to no real notice.
This cover version was #3 in the UK, and did chart in the US, but not in the top 50.
Yes, the video is pretty lame...
Very soulful song/version.

Van's original (Ireland) group (Parrot Label US) was Them. Shadows of Knight (from Chicago) did the cover of this song that was the bigger hit in the US (versus Them's version) back in the 60's

Oops, and I know that too, just old man brain misfiring this morning! Jeez, I even have the Them version bookmarked. Need to edit my post.

Vanilla Fudge also did this on Fallon a couple of years ago, and they are still rockin' away, but I like the one from the 60's a little better...a little more flair...

The Beatles - 'Long Tall Sally'. McCartney nails Little Richard in one take:

Sorry for the poor quality on this one, but it is a genuine live performance from the late 60's with an extended solo by Jose. I'd love to find a clean copy of this classic performance

I'm a big fan of covers that improve upon the original. So many bands/artists butcher already good songs.

Here's a list of some of my favorites, some of which have already been mentioned:

"Hurt" - Johnny Cash. Reznor's original is already perfect and amazing, but Cash puts a spin on it that takes it to a whole other level.

"You Really Got Me" - Van Halen. The Kink's original is already great, but VH completely energizes it.

"All Along the Watch Tower" - Jimi Hendrix. The Dylan version is good, but Jimi's is far superior.

"The Ghost of Tom Joad" - Rage Against the Machine. Bears little resemblance to the original but is completely awesome.

"Ring of Fire" Social Distortion. Heresy, probably, but I prefer it to the Cash original (which is also very good)

"Mad World" The version from Donnie Darko. Way better than the original.

"Creep" The version sung by a choir that was used in "The Social Network" trailer.
