Favorite 80s Tunes

Doesn't anyone here like to "Wang Chung"? The use of the band's name as a verb doesn't seem to have caught on, but I use it every once in awhile, usually in conjunction with the adjective "Smurfy".

I never saw REM in Ames. But did see them in Iowa City at Hancher. I think they we're touring behind Fables of the Reconstruction.

I can't remember what tour but I know 10,000 Maniacs opened for them and I was sitting 2nd row orchestra pit!

All of this reminiscing makes me wonder what the "local" live music scene is like in central Iowa these days. I can only remember one local band from back in the mid 80s...The Eclectics. I have been to a number of college towns and many have very vibrant local music scenes...Austin, Athens, and Baton Rouge all come to mind.

I've always liked Peter Gabriel. Sledgehammer, Red Rain, Shock the Monkey, I have the Touch. Don't like the overplayed, In Your Eyes, though.

A great 80s song is She Sells Sanctuary by the Cult. Great song!

LOVE THE CULT! I have seen them twice, both times in CR.

What?! No Prince??

And you can also put Purple Rain up for one of the best 80's themed movies ever. It's right up there with Flashdance, Footloose, Breakin 2: Electric Boogaloo, and Legend.

Anyone here like the BoDeans? Saw them open for U2 at Carver in IC...fell in love! I wore BoDeans (first two releases) tapes out in my car in the late 80s in high school!

The mid-80s had some great albums released during that era...Springsteen's "Born In The USA" (not his greatest work), Prince's "Purple Rain" and The Police's "Synchronicity"! Three of the greatest of all-time right there!

Love em, saw em at the Civic Center in Des Moines with Big Head Todd and the Monsters. GREAT SHOW.

Africa - Toto

BTW, if you want to see a wicked cool cover of it...

I love the Beasties Boys. "Paul's Boutique" was genius.

What was everyone's first concert? I went to see Bon Jovi and Cinderella when I was about 9 or so.

The Beach Boys about 1964. They played three sets and had a dance floor in front of the stage. Saw them again the next year and they had moved up to playing on a baseball diamond. The drummer had trouble reaching the stands when he threw his drum sticks to the crowd.

OK, no 80's compilation is complete without some synthesizers. All these classic tunes were loaded with 80's synth:

Animotion - Don't You Want Me Baby, and Fascination, Obsession
Flock of Seagulls - Wishing (If I Had A Photograph), I Ran
Madness - Our House
Eurythmics - Sweet Dreams, Would I Lie to You?
Tears for Fears - Shout, Everybody Wants to Rule the World
Duran Duran - Reflex, Hungry Like the Wolf
Falco - Rock Me Amadeus
Men Without Hats - Safety Dance

As far as I am concerned, it ain't 80's if it ain't synth!

Going further back:
Animals House of Rising Sun
Rolling Stones Brown Sugar Shack
Ozzie Osbourne and Black Sabbath
Toto
Prince Purple rain for the 2 big songs
Pink Floyd
Siouxie Sue
REM
Pretenders
Styx
Pixies
Not much in 2000-2007 worth noting. High tide was probably 1980-85 for keepers. Can't say Britney and realted gang memebers light up the night. Hip Hopp/Rap is too rough to be pleasant unless Shaq does it.

anything ACDC
land down under- the working men?? is that right..its somthing like that..
safety dance- men without hats
