Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp all went down this morning.

I'm far from a network guy, but looking through twitter responses, their DNS is completely gone, almost as if the sites never existed.

Get the "good, won't miss them" jokes out now but from a cyber security standpoint, this is pretty significant.

I don't blame them after the 60 minutes episode last night. That place is a dumpster fire, profit over morality.

Between the pandemic and the election, I’ve been on the verge of deleting FB the past couple years, but couldn’t quite get myself to do it. Think last night’s whistleblower was the affirmation I needed to finally take the dive.

I deleted it a couple months ago. I didn't notice its absence after about a week. It's surprising how easily you can get rid of that habit when it isn't on the home screen of your phone. I love social media, especially Twitter and Reddit, but Facebook was no longer useful or interesting.

How does someone from outside FB nuke the DNS records for the entire domain? Sounds like something that should be impossible.

What did the 60 minutes episode expose? I missed it

Basically that FB put profits ahead of user's well being. FB internal research discovered that people prefer dumpster fire to blah, blah information. Not really much insight- why else was NASCAR popular? People love crashes, not cars running in circles!!

IMO a bit hypocritical coming from a network News organization.
