F1 2022 Discussion

Could see the writing on the wall for weeks, too bad the partnership between him and the car just never came around, except for that weekend at Monza last year.

Soooo, Ricciardo to Alpine? He's had some success with a Renault.

I don't want to bury the guy but wouldn't you rather take a flyer on a young guy rather than run him back?

I can see both ways, Danny is clearly a very talented driver, in the right car he could do well. Similar to how Aston Martin just signed Alonso, they could have taken a flyer on a young driver as well but apparently decided an experienced, proven driver was the right call. Danny is also quite popular already and very marketable which is a big bonus.

A new young driver would certainly cost less though.

Half curious to see what Haas does with Mick now. I know it brings the Schumacher name, but man he’s wrecked 3 cars this year already. Especially with Haas’ budget. They can’t afford that.

Annnnd they’ve broken off talks with Mick.

Yeah, I think that last 6 month stretch or so at Renault was probably Daniel’s best since he departed from RB. But he just hasn’t shown the same capabilities or ever reached what was thought to be his ceiling.

I could see Ricciardo doing something a bit crazy like joining Nascar or something.
Buxton jokingly tweeted crowd funding an Indy team with a pic of Seb and Danny. But honestly, NASCAR would be right up Daniel’s alley and I think he would fit.

Isn't Alonso honestly a better driver at this point though?

He probably is more marketable but like you said, he probably isn't bringing in more money than his contract right now.

Alonso is a better driver at any point, but it's very possible that Danny is still better than a driver with no F1 experience would be.

Here is my thing though, that I agree with. He would be better than a new guy. Now that said, Danny Ric has 19 points this season so far. Mick has 12 in a worse car. Freaking Yuki has 11. I have no doubt he'd be better, but it doesn't appear to be translating into points and ultimately that's how you make the team money in the constructor's championship.

What do you guys think of the rumor Monaco might be on the chopping block?

From a purely racing standpoint, Monaco is is about as boring as F1 can get. That being said, the history makes the race attractive. I’m not sure F1 would deny the amount of ridiculously wealthy fans that attend the race. I think most drivers have a place in Monaco, as well.

I'm coming at this mostly naïve about F1 (most of my racing knowledge is for stock cars and sports cars, not open wheels) so thank you for the commentary. What do you think of the idea of "eliminating" the race and converting the Monaco GP into a qualifying/time trial "race?" That's what it is now, anyways, right?
