Expectations for 2018-2019

I was looking at the talent on next year's Big 12 teams in regards to Rivals HS rankings and here are the results:

KU: 12 players rated in the Rivals 150: 9 4 stars and 3 5 stars ( I made an assumption that Newman leaves bc that's the rumor. Also, still have potential to add Romeo Langford another 5 star.)

Texas: 12 players rated in the Rivals 150: 11 4 stars and 1 5 star. ( Texas also has oversigned so they need to also make room for two more players)

Iowa State: 7 players in Rivals 150: 3 4 stars and 1 5 star.

TCU: 6 in the Rivals 150, all 4 stars.

Baylor: 5 players in Rivals 150 with 6 4 stars overall.

OU: 5 Rivals 150 with 3 4 stars

WVU: 5 Rivals 150 with 2 4 stars

KSU: 4 Rivals 150 with 2 being 4 stars.

Tech: 2 Rivals 150 with 3 4 stars overall because they have 1 Juco 4 star.

OSU: 2 Rivals 150 players; both four stars

So ISU has the 3rd most overall players from Rivals 150 and one of only 3 teams with a 5 star. Of course there are guys that are proven players that weren't on the 150 like Shayok and Jacobson and for Tech Smith and Culver as other examples. It is clear to me though that next year ISU should be in the upper half of the league from a pure talent standpoint. The key will be putting it all together and building a cohesive team on both ends of the floor.

Wow, Shaka does underachieve, doesn't he?

Just watching the Big 12 quarters against OSU from last year, and the very first play illustrated perfectly how breaking down a defense is a team effort that requires everyone to be exactly where they’re supposed to be.

Monte brought it up right-center, Matt curled around left, took the hand off and passed to Naz, Naz tossed it down to Monte who had curled through the lane, who dropped it to Deonte baseline left, Deonte makes a move to the bucket and draws the defenders allowing a scoop pass to Solomon for the easy and one. Everyone touched it and the whole thing took maybe 8 seconds.

the current guards need to pass the ball for that to happen though.

It's a combination. Clearly we don't have as good of passers this year (or as good off the dribble), but it's more than that. It's about everyone executing their role in any play, offense or defense. A lot of that comes with experience.

While many are drinking the Kool-Aid for next year, I'm cautiously optimistic. Will be better? Absolutely. But 20-plus wins? I don't think so. Hope I'm wrong.

Monte must have drawn that play up because we all know Prohm doesn't know offense.

It's possible. 18-20 is probably a decent benchmark.

We finished with 13 this year.

Improve some on D with Shayok/Jacobson/healthy Babb.

Offensive improvement with THT and more experienced rotation.

There is no doubt that we should have more depth and significantly more overall talent in our top 7-8.

It won't be easy but you can see how we could get an additional 5-7 wins.

Top 5 of Big 12, KU first and like 7 teams fighting it out for the top 5
NCAA 9 Seed.

Looking forward THT, believe he has a higher rating that Wig. if he can chip in 10-11 per game that would be huge.

The nice thing there will be enough healthy bodies to run scrimmages. The fact you could not trot 10 players out during practice to run an effective scrimmage has to have a huge negative impact.

Classes are starting to get more balanced out, so that should provide some good depth.

Of course someone will transfer out, so hopefully they can land another shooting guard on the transfer market.

I know Prohm doesn't usually like to play more than 8 but I think he should next year because they will have the guys to do it. And it will probably help Babb's knee if he doesn't have to play huge minutes.

I tend to think that way to but so far his track record with Frosh is they have to be above and beyond better then the person they are behind. Look at Lewis and J Long, they are only getting minutes because of injuries. He doesn't like letting guys learn in a game setting unless they are ready (opposite of TOE). An argument could be made either way but right now CSP likes to make sure his guys are ready before he throws them in the fire. Thats why I think he rotation could be 8 maybe 9 depending on Lewis and his work on Defense.

so sad that we are going to have to win the NCAA tournament in 2020 instead of 2019. It would have been fun to have that atmosphere up here in Minnesota :)

Just stay healthy, play consistent from one game to the next, continue to get better as the season progresses, and I'll be happy.

If those things happen, the rest will follow.

Wigginton ranked #24 by Rivals, THT #31. It's close but Wigginton was a higher ranking out of high school. But to your point, I think I'm more excited about THT's prospects than I was with Wigginton, even though I was very excited to see Wigginton play too. THT's just such a fluid game and for a guy his size, it's hard not to be excited.
