Enterprise, IA

You can always check out Alpha, Iowa about 3 miles south of Waucoma. We used to go there in high school to get Alpha burgers (1 lb burgers with saute'd onions and green peppers). Not sure if the alpha tap and pool still exists though.

Using Waucoma as a reference to get somewhere? That has to be a first. My dad grew up in Waucoma, and back in his day Alpha was the happening place to go on a Friday night. Sounds like it still may be that way.

Have not been to Alpha or Waucoma for a long time, maybe it is time for a summer road trip. Always liked fishing for small mouth on the Little Turkey.

I don't think it's still open is it?

Last I knew, it was not. I used to have a bunch of buddies who would come into Des Moines once a year and they loved that place. Smaller, out of the way, more "personal attention" if you will. So I'd have to check every year and make sure it was still open. I think it's been closed for 4-5 years.

Scotch Grove, IA. Located about 8 miles south of Monticello on Hwy 38. Mostly consists of old Balster Implement warehouses. Old man Balster passed away a few years ago, and they recently had an estate sale. The warehouses were full of antiques and old appliances that were never sold. Mike and Frank from American Pickers were at the sale. There's a tiny bar called The Grove located there. Decent food, but nothing special. Pretty neat town overall though.

Back on topic:

Google Maps shows East 1st Street in Ankeny changes name to Enterprise Road/NE 94th Ave once outside the Ankeny city limits.

Looking at the DeLorme Atlas & Gazatteer, it shows that Enterprise is on the main railroad coming north out of Des Moines (Ankeny is on a rail spur, not the main line). I'm sure this had something to do with the establishment of Enterprise, and also it's eventual demise - common story - towns sprung up along the railroads and then died when the road systems bypassed them.

I live in Ankeny and can confirm that a town once existed there. Whether or not it still is I'm not sure of. All that remains is a couple of houses a few miles east of Ankeny.
