Engagement Ring Advice

I have a wife that hates shopping (lucky me) and has a tough time making decisions so she was very happy with how I got her her engagement ring.
Had her best friend call her up and ask if she would go ring shopping with her, because her boyfriend was dropping hints that he was probably going to propose soon. My wife bought it hook, line, and sinker. Her friend then gathered all the "intel" for me and she loved (loves) the ring.
SInce then I have bought a few things, and sent several friends and relatives to Fiscus Jewelers in Ankeny. Noel has a huge variety and does a lot of custom jewelry as well which has been a hit with several people I know.

Ebay.

Save the money and you'll get something just as big. If someone has 1000 positive feedbacks from selling diamonds they won't be selling fakes. You might want to concoct a good lie though so she can tell friends she got it from a store (say you drove to KC or Omaha cause the ones here sucked or something.)

Now....disregard that and remember if it flies, floats, or f+cks....rent it!

We did some ring shopping together before we got engaged, so hubby knew what style I liked. He ended up getting the diamond from Ames Silversmithing and had a setting made where he was living at the time.

The Pinterest idea is a good one. I know I have a board with "Gift Ideas" and hubby did use it for my last birthday.

We got engaged while I was still in college and he was just out. Looking at diamonds we did the whole "can always upgrade later" thinking. So far 15 years later I'm still waiting. ;) And now finding out we are on girl #4, I think I will be waiting a whole lot longer.

The fact that you are consulting a message board for ring advice makes me think the best advice possible would be to tap the brakes on this excursion.

I take offense to that statement. My boat has been really good to me. It still floats, and has never broke down.

Save the $$ and use it for a downpayment on a house.

Serious suggestion, ask your girlfriend if she even wants a diamond. My long term girlfriend and I both agree that diamond **** waving is a huge waste of money. She said she would rather have an expensive purse and would be fine with a moissanite ring so she can "show it off" when people inevitably ask to see the ring.

edit: I should probably add the disclaimer that my girlfriend REALLY likes fashionable purses so it might be a completely different demon than diamond lust

Purses over time are going to cost you a lot more, especially because they need a new wallet for each one, and then a new keychain. You are talking $500-$750 at a min everytime she does this. And it will probably be multiple times a year.

She gets the engagement one free. The rest come out of her account, right?

I already own the condo we live in so really I should tell her I made a contribution to the principle in her name and give her a certificate to frame. "money for people"

Her account? What is that? You will learn in marriage, what is her's is her's and what is yours is ours.

my wife's wedding ring was stolen and we went to Joseph's. I thought they would be very expensive but they are actually very competitively priced. on a separate note make sure you get it insured. what the price of gold skyrocketing it will cost you twice is much 5 years down the road replace it if it is lost or stolen.

As someone who custom cuts foam to the shape of my handbags so they retain their shape when stored in their protective covers on their special shelves, I can honestly say that you would be much better off financially buying diamonds than purses. IRL though your girlfriend should go for both.

Oh how things have changed... My wife's ring didn't fit after she got pregnant and she's very much against getting it resized until we are done having kids (which may be now, depending on how the little guy is behaving on any given day). So we got her a gold band to wear in place of the one I got her.
