Emmy nominations

I'm still shocked about Parenthood getting nothing. Both Monica Potter and Peter Krause were amazing this season. Do the Emmys just not like Jason Katims? He did Friday Night Lights too and I think it took until the final season before Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton (Coach and Tami Taylor) got nominated for anything.

I love both of those shows, but I just don't think they're showy enough to get nominations. Pretty much everything else that was nominated in drama was a period piece or crazy-plot cable drama. Nobody is taking the time to appreciate well done down-to-earth storytelling. Even when playing the cancer card, Parenthood was too understated to force the Emmys to pay attention.

I don't watch or follow Glee, but didn't Jane Lynch ask to leave the show because she didn't think her character served any purpose anymore?

I hadn't heard that, but I do know she was on this past season.

I'm pretty torn on drama series between GOT and Downton. They're both incredible, but in very different ways - GOT is very in-your-face, action and conflict-driven. Downton is much, much more subtle, and it had a ton of big dramatic performances this year.

Bryan Cranston and Jon Hamm will continue to wrestle each other for the leading actor in a dramatic series until one or both are off the air. It's probably an honor to be nominated with them but I dont see how any of those nominees can beat out those two unless the voters get tired of voting Hamm or Cranston.

True but neither one won last year...Lewis was a shock and won for Homeland. Hamm has never won.

I never got on the bandwagon, but I'm pretty sure GoT is a genre show and just picked up a ****-ton of nominations. Orphan Blacks biggest problem is that it was on BBC America, not that it was a sci-fi show. If it had been on HBO it would have gotten recognized.

Hamm's never won, and probably won't at this point. The one year during BB's run where Cranston wasn't eligible they gave it to Kyle Chandler for Friday Night Lights. Cranston is the one that has the real stranglehold.

I was listening to, I think Andy Greenwald on the BS Report after the season finale and he made a good point: Don Draper is an amazing character, but he doesn't really lend himself to the kinds of big showy moments that win actor's awards. Everything is too internal. Maybe if he didn't have to compete with Cranston every year it wouldn't be that big of a deal.

Does it seem odd to anyone else that American Horror Story is still considered a miniseries? I mean, I get that's what it's technically billed as, but once you have multiple seasons I sort of think it's just a drama series.

I think the shows themselves get to pick what categories they contend in, so I'm sure they dump it there so it has a better shot at getting nominated. I don't watch it, but aren't the seasons basically unrelated stories that just share the AHS franchise name?

They have a category for reality tv hosts? I'd slightly understand if they included judges under the "host" umbrella but honestly who watches American Idol for Ryan Seacrest? Replace him with Geoff Peterson and nothing really changes.

Yeah I think it is categorized that way because each season is a standalone story. But it has a huge advantage over other miniseries because its a full season show.

Once in a while one will break through, but sci-fi definitely gets ignored for the most part. For sci-fi it seems to have nothing to do with what network its on. John Noble not getting nominated once over 5 seasons of consistently outstanding performances is ridiculous.

Yep. Not all the same actors/actresses in each series although quite a few are the same. Totally different era and plot. Same will be for the third season this fall which focuses on the witch trials in Salem.

It comes down to picking the right "reels" to submit to the academy, and obviously Hamm isn't picking the right ones to submit for the final voting. His work is fantastic, but his competition is doing a better job of selecting the reels to submit.

I know the premium cable shows are all the rage for drama, but I would like to see a little love for Person of Interest. Acting by Michael Emerson, Jim Caviezel, and Taraji Henson is all very good.

agreed! That is my favorite show right now.

Also surprised Julianna Margulies didn't get nominated for The Good Wife - she was really good this year.

And even though its adult cast should play right into the Emmys' need to only nominate and watch familiar names, no recognition for The Middle.

I like The Middle, but the only character that I could see that would be up for a nomination would be Patricia Heaton. Neil Flynn's character is just too normal of a character to garner any recognition. Also I think the thing that works against The Middle is that it is just your garden variety family sitcom meaning that the show doesn't do anything out ordinary since they focus on one nuclear family unit.

yea, but you could say the exact same thing about modern family. The only person in that cast that deserves the Emmy love he gets is Ty Burrell.
