I read a lot on this board that it's basically up to the players on whether or not they return next year. That is NOT the case. I have a family member that is a head coach at a Power 5 school and she is NOT returning some players even thought they are technically eligible to come back. My point is coaches will have a big say in if a player stays or goes. As for football specifically, I would think the current limitations on coaches and support staff would be maxed out at 85 scholarship players + grayshirts + walk-ons so adding another year of players to that would be a daunting task. Also, a year ago Chase Allen told me that an in-state football scholarship at Iowa State is worth about $290,000 for the lifetime of the athlete. If you divide that by 5 a year costs $58,000. Even if we kept 10 scholarship players around that starts adding up fast.

With that being said... what players do we think are 1) going to stay for a super senior year and 2) who do the coaches allow to stay?

Kene's factor in our return game comes to mind first for some reason but who else?

I found an interesting article on Teams that benefit the most from NCAA's eligibility changes

Although it was not discussed much I think it was pretty obvious that scholarships are not guaranteed and for some, maybe all, sports there will be a scholarship crunch because of covid revenue impacts. Most of the speculation I saw was on seniors who coaches would obviously want back and fans speculating on their impact. I've wondered more on the athletes that coaches would welcome back but are graduating and will maybe want to move on and start their work careers. There might be some players who would like to play a fifth year that will be told no but I think their numbers will be small.

I’m pretty sure we already said anyone who wants to come back is guaranteed their spot. Other schools might not but that’s their loss in recruiting.

Who's we? Pollard? Campbell? I haven't heard that anywhere.

As far as who might want to come back?

1) Kene
2) Hummel
3) E. Uwazurike
4) Chase Allen/Dylan Soehner
5) L. White

All have been good, but probably don't project to be drafted or UFA... With another season maybe? Of course I wish all of the seniors could/would come back, but I highly doubt even the majority will.

Crazy that all of our seniors have used their redshirt except Hummel. https://cyclones.com/sports/football/roster

I would think the seniors (and juniors) have to evaluate if they are NFL material and would they help their draft status by coming back? The first three that comes to mind are Bailey, Eisworth, and Kolar.

Pollard said that back in the spring. I don’t think a ton do come back but it wouldn’t surprise me if some impact players did.

Landon Akers seems like one to me who might want to come back

I'm guessing the transfer portal will be overflowing. Teams like Kansas are going to have an opportunity to reduce the talent gap and not have to throw green recruits to the wolves if they are willing to pony up.

If I were a Kansas senior, I would have 12/5/20 circled as the end of a 4/5 year nightmare with no intention of prolonging the misery. If I'm not ready to give up on football, grad transfer here I come.

Not what I meant. Bad teams are going g to have a ton of transfers to pick up if they want.

Kene ain't coming back. That's what I'm hearing anyway.
I think he could get picked up by a team and have a shot at being a starting kick returner. He has great speed, vision and cutting ability. If ISU actually had good special teams, Kene would probably have 4 or 5 career kick return tds. As it is now, he is 2nd or 3rd in the country in kick return yards.

Giving guys another year takes away opportunities for younger guys, not really on board with that especially when a nearly full season is being played. So do you tell your recruits sorry, no scholarship for you because we are giving player X a sixth year. Are we going to let all the high school players play another year to make of for the year stolen from many of them.
