1st Trailer dropped today. I read the first book of the Dune universe at the beginning of this whole lockdown and it quickly became my favorite book. Villeneuve is planning to break the first book (and part of Dune Messiah, it's believed) into 2 separate movies. I think this is a great decision, because on top of Lynch's adaptation of Dune being ahead of it's time visually (trying to create this world had to be done perfect and Lynch got a bit too fantastical imo) I think it's biggest detriment was that it packed too much story into a longer movie, rather than allowing the time to build characters and storylines to their full potential. Anyone else excited for this? If nothing else, the cinematography and aesthetic of the movie is going to be breathtaking.

It looks great. Yes the Lynch movie was visually stunning for the time but was too ambitious. I like visual setting for this one. It'll be interesting how they weave the House politics and Dune lore into a cohesive plot. But from what they were showing they are giving a lot time to the behind the scenes treachery.

*Whispers* could this be the one?

I love Dune. I actually just finished a fantastic audiobook of it.

Let me assure you you want to stop there though.

I am VERY excited about this.

I've heard Messiah and Children of Dune are at least worth the read if you are fascinated by the universe of Dune. But every book his son made was just a cash grab haha

Messiah is okay. Children of Dune is edging on to total crap. God Emperor of Dune, Heretics of Dune, just absolute dreck.

I've actually read two of the Brian Herbert Dune books and they are much better believe it or not. Nothing comes close to Dune though.

I’m such a huge fan of the Lynch version from the 80’s. I used to take pride in liking it and in “getting it” as most folks found it too weird and complicated.

Anyway, I can’t wait to see how this story will play out with it having two films to unfold and CG from 2020, not ‘84.

Cant wait.

I have never read the books, but I loved the Lynch movie as a kid. I don't think I really understood it, but I was just a huge sci-fi and fantasy fan and outside of Star Wars and a few others there weren't a lot of great sci-fi and fantasy movies in the 80s. I mean, Krull was one of my favorite movies as a kid.

This trailer looks cool, but I have to admit using a cover of Eclipse makes me think of this:

Looks pretty perfect coming from somebody who has read the book multiple times and even a fan of Lynch version. I think this looks better than what Jodorowsky's would have been too.

I work in licensed toys and collectibles, this title is going to be a sleeper hit in that area for the very few who did things for it. I had heard industry comments it was mind blowing, but the trailer is probably too late to get in last minute development.

Dune is an all-timer. Messiah and Children are acceptable sequels that wrap up the character and plot arcs established by the first, but they are not transcendent achievements like the original novel that built the universe.

God Emperor Is not a fun read, but it grows on you over time. There is not much for plot and character development, but the book itself is a fascinating piece of political philosophy. Reading the original after hearing everything the God Emperor says in the fourth book really crystallizes and gives additional layers to the first novel.

God Emperor is in my top 10 for science fiction and fantasy novels. The original is first on the list.

LOVED the books and the original movie - while the worst piece of crap - will grab my attention to where I drop everything regardless of where they are in the movie to watch...

Reminds me of Robert Ludlum and how many books he started and finished after being dead...

I think that’s just a taste thing. I still want a story in my sci fi and I don’t get into the political or cultural treatise stuff. Heinlien and later Orson Scott Card stuff for example.
