I think Jeff is handling it better than Nick Nurse. I don't like how Nurse is putting ISU in a position to look even worse if he does not actually get thru the interviews today or he decides not to take the job. I know it is hard to look worse, but I would have liked it if Nurse waited until he took the job to talk about it.
The big difference is that KU wasn't desperate enough to make Manning an assistant with no coaching experience. It took Manning four years to earn the right to be called an assistant.
Seems like a lot of fluff and window dressing to me. I hope behind the scenes this is all part of a master plan and not a bunch of knee jerk reactions. GMacs track record begs to differ.
I would prefer to hire a bunch McDonald's All-American Dads as long as their sons came along. I don't think there would be a drop off in coaching and we would improve talent. Who knows, they may even stick around.
I regret how pessimistic I have become but in lieu of the current recruiting woes it's getting hopeless. My gawd, we have gone from hoping Harrison Barnes would be in this class to losing Bo Barnes to Hawaii. I mean are you freaking kidding me?
Bill Self is 6-4 and Danny Manning is 6-10. Greg is 6-8 and Jeff is 6-7. We have an inch on KU.:wink:
Every one of your posts is negative. Why? If you are a fan, you would think you would hope for Iowa State to succeed.
Agreed, but Grayer was listed at 6-5 when he played not 6-7 which probably means he is actually 6-3 and a half.
New men's basketball assistants arrive in Ames
"While the faces on the floor for ISU men's basketball team next season will be mostly the same as in 2002--2003, the faces on the sideline won't be.
New head coach Wayne Morgan introduced his staff of assistants to the media Wednesday. The staff includes just one holdover (besides Morgan) from last season's staff, a former Cyclone player and a new position, the director of basketball operations.
Bob Sundvold returns as an assistant. He will be joined by former North Carolina aide Fred Quartlebaum, former Southern California assistant Damon Archibald, and former Cyclone and NBA player Jeff Grayer, who will be a graduate assistant. The director of basketball operations will be Darryl Sharp, who comes from Norfolk State."
Which...sadly enough at this point in time of ISU mens basketball, might be a step in the right direction. Because without either of these...what do we have?
He was on board to be a grad assistant, but at the time, he had actually graduated yet, so it didn't work out...
I have a hunch Jeff would help on the recruiting side of things. I want him back at Iowa State!
That is the irony of the situation. Jeff Grayer represents everything great about Hilton Magic and ISU being a very respected, competitive program within the conference. Brought back by a coach that has accomplished nothing but continue to destroy that legacy.
Hope he has some Hilton Magic dust in his pockets. I do believe in fairies, I do, I do....

There's no question that Grayer could bring some intangibles to McD's staff that over the course of a few seasons would start to produce results on the floor. Whether it be recruiting leads, instruction, coaching or flat out historical awareness. The issue I have is McD only has 2 years to keep his job. He needs another Nick Nurse who can help him win right now.
