DSM Brewfest

I've never been to this one but heard the lines are brutal. Any truth?

No, not brutal, but it can be irritating when someone decides to stand there and talk beer with the pourer while there are people waiting behind him. The lines generally move fast since it's only samples. People will be lined up before they open so, if you can, get there early to grab some of the free swag while they last. Boulevard had some cool bottle openers last year.

Any IPAs that you guys would recommend? My wife is a big IPA fan.

Our pale ale at Twisted Vine Brewery isn't a IPA but I would think she would like it. It is only 82 IBU's so real close to be calling it an IPA.

Even more of the ballpark will be opened up this year to help accomodate the crowds. Live music will be out in the bleacher area of right field! It truly is a great event if you have not gone before.

Toppling Goliath makes the best IPAs in the state, but Peace Tree and Madhouse make good ones too. Keg Creek's was at Bait Shop and was ok, but nothing special. Backpocket, Olde Main, Great River and Millstream don't really make standard IPAs on a regular basis. Great River has a fairly hoppy regular pale, and a really dark rye pale that's kind of a DIPA.

Try them all and come to your own conclusions, I guess.

Some have mentioned this one already but Toppling Goliath Golden Nugget IPA is probably one of the best Iowa made IPAs I have had. Very balanced and delicious.

Toppling Goliath will be the next "big" Iowa breweries.
