Drop UConn

If Jamie had dropped Utah from the 2010 schedule and replaced it with an unranked opponent, ISU would probably have finished 6-6 and gone to a bowl game. This would have helped recruiting in particular and the program in general. He didn't, and now that's water under the bridge.

I hope Jamie doesn't repeat the mistake this year, though, by keeping the game to UConn on the schedule. I don't know how many starters return, but they did win the Big East last year and it will be an away game for the Clones.

If Jamie keeps UConn on the schedule and it costs us a bowl trip again this year, then why try to build a winning football program?

How often does this happen?

How well does a program lose the stigma of being a chicken and dropping a game agreement?

Keep UConn - the program is in disarray and their new coach was an abysmal failure at Syracuse. This could end up being an el cheapo BCS-caliber win for us.

UCONN isn't very good. We should beat them. They certainly don't have the talent Utah has. Besides all that it would cost money to buy out the game and we have already gotten out of one game for next year so it isn't happening. Get over it.

Or beat UCONN

I think it will be a great year to be playing them while they are in transition.

I say buy out UCONN.

The amount of money you need to buy out UCONN is negligent compared to a bowl win. Bowl wins build traditions. Scheduling UCONN or Utah and get humiliated by them doesn't.

How about we don't run away from games. Take on all comers. Thats how you build a successful program. To be the best you have to beat the best.

Lol.

To build a program, you start by consistently making bowl games. That means you do what everyone else does you schedule 3-4 easy wins (many schedule 4) and 8-9 games vs bcs conference teams. With 9 conference games, until the point where the NCAA allows SOS to be factored in bowl eligibility, we have those 9 BCS games already locked in, all 3 of our nonconference games should be easy wins to give us the most chance of making bowl games. Guarantee 3 wins, and then pick off 3 in the conference- and THEN you'll get your shot at another tougher team in bowl season.

Its really a simple concept, and flat out dumb that ISU, one of the least successful programs in the country in football, should be taking on tougher schedules than anyone else in our conference. You dont become better just by throwing yourself into a meat grinder. You become better by gradually building up. When and if we get to a point where we realistically are gunning for a national title, then we can build up our nonconference schedule. Until then, having a strong SOS does nothing but give some people a small reason to feel better about themselves while we sit at home in December.

Scheduling for a program is important for all programs but especially those with the history of the program we root for. I remember last summer a few posters (me included) would consistently discuss how difficult our 2010 schedule was going to be for us to make a bowl but we would get criticized by those who felt differently. They would post things like "CPR would not want you on his team with attitudes like that" or "we won't win a national title with a weak schedule" or even comments that were an attempt to make those of us who felt that way look weak.

Well, I think we found out how important scheduling is. What you have to do when scheduling is ask yourself a realistic question about your goals. Tough schedule so you can take on the strongest opponents and possibly not get to a bowl game? Or a schedule that has 6 or more likely wins on it? It did seem as those who thought we would be better for facing an incredibly strong non-conference schedule were not happy when we finished one win short of a bowl game.

So what is it? Does 5 wins on a tough schedule make you a stronger program than 6 wins and a bowl game?

The Utah game did not keep the Cyclones from going to a bowl game. The K-State and NU games most certainly did. I don't want to become the program that never plays a decent opponent out of conference outside of the Hawkeyes. And I definitely don't want to become the program that runs away from already scheduled games for fear of losing. What a horrible message to send to both current players and future recruits. Come to ISU where we run away from a challenge!

Yet sitting at home in December while over half of the D1 teams are preparing for a bowl game is a better message? We all get it...we need to improve a lot! But an extra month (15 days I believe) of practice does wonders for the program. We didn't get those 15 days or so this off-season. How does that look to recruits?
