Down goes Iowa

From Hok forums:

"No thirst for watching college basketball right now, and here I am sitting in Buffalo until Sunday with second round tournament tickets. Yep, it hurts. My pity party aside, I am sure there are 15 young men who are feeling much worse. Damn Spiders!"
To be fair I've been there. Well not the in game tickets angle but after the UAB loss I didn't watch any of the tournament until the Elite 8.
I think this is optimistic. Keegan commands a lot of defensive attention and Bohannon spreads things out for everyone else. They are likely to struggle next year.
Keegan is a big loss but I do think Kris and P. McCaffery take steps forward and somewhat fill the gap. Bohannon is just pretty limited outside shooting 3's and Iowa has guys already on the team who do that reasonably well.
Iowa and Fran keep proving me wrong. I thought they would have a significant drop this year. It won't surprise me if they're back in the tournament next year.

This is how I feel. I've seen enough statements on how without Garza they'd be trash or previous to that the guard play would be so terrible that they wouldn't the tournament that I'm automatically skeptical of folks saying that again.

Obviously we'll have to see how the transfer portal shakes out, both gains and losses, but keep in mind from last year to this year Iowa lost Garza(NPOTY and top scorer+ rebounder), Wieskamp(2nd scoring+2nd rebounding), CJ Fredrick(4th scoring +3 pt sharpshooter), and Jack Nunge(quality reserve big man). Despite this they still managed to get a pretty high seed in the tournament.

Assuming they can hold on to the key guys this year the base returning looks way better.

Fran is pretty good at reloading, it's winning in the tournament that's his problem.

Downs is fine. Trent acts like a giant douche. Ross has had a significant change in on-air behavior (for the better) after his “the world is about to go back to how it’s supposed to” rant when Skeletors team hit the top 5
Yeah I don’t mind Downs at all. Prefer him to Peterson actually.

I think Patrick McCaffrey, Kris Murray and Sandfort take pretty good steps next season. If they can find a decent shooter somewhere, they’ll like be back in the tournament next year. Maybe not a 5 seed, but definitely back in.

Also, Toussaint and Perkins are decent pieces and will be another year experienced.

Unfortunately, all the Hoks have to do is finish in the top 9 teams in the B!G...we know the selection committee will do the rest.

Does it really matter how big of a step forward those guys take? Fran will always find a way to score points. Did you see Richmond blow by that swiss cheese defense at will? Those guys and that roster aren't going to fix that.

To quote the great former 49ers coach Steve Mariucci about Iowa's loss yesterday... "Bummer".

I'll give mad Fran a little dap here. He's assembled some good teams the last few years.
Prior to those last 3 seasons, wasn't really impressed with his body of work and the ability of those teams, but they were decent. Iowa stuck with a guy who was keeping his head above water for quite a few years and got some rewards for it the last 3 seasons. Good for them.

C'mon Clones win this game tonight! Lets drop a little wound salt on em!

With Garza, weiscamp, and Murray last year did they under achieve?

I'd enjoy this more if Iowa State hadn't lost as a 2 & 3 seed after winning conference tournaments.

At least we don't have to deal with hawkroach basketball pride. Way too many t shirt fans running around the last week.
I AGREE....Way too many TAVERN HOKS ....Way Too Much talk about the upcoming (not now!) Kansas Game ... & Of course the Hoks were a shoo in for the final 4...
