Dogs in bed

I own two Shih Tzu's. From day one they've slept in a kennel. Shih Tzu's heritage is as a chinese mountain dog that slept in caves. If you ever watch them jump from surface to surface (like mountain goats) and as they always seek out the highest point in the area you'll realize it's true.

My dogs LOVE their kennel. When I literally ask them if "they're ready to go to bed" they sprint to the kennel. Of course, they also know they're going to get a treat. But it's their domain - even when they get in trouble they'll sneak down to the kennel for refuge.

They'll howl at you for awhile if you start, but like someone posted above, when that happens I cover the kennel with a blanket - they stop and go to sleep.

Our Basset sleeps with us. She's big but thankfully has short legs so she doesn't spread out much. The issue is in the winter she gets cold and in the middle of the night she'll put her cold nose in my face to tell me she wants under the comforter. She also likes my wife's pillow which I find funny but its not received well on the other side of the bed.

My boxer sleeps with my wife and I. I hated it at first but then we upgraded to a king size bed and now there is tons of room and he keeps me warm in the winter. He sleeps like a stone too so there isn't a whole lot of trouble with it.

Honestly if I really wanted to I'm sure we could train him to sleep on the floor but it really doesn't bother me anymore.

Our boxer used to sleep with us, but too many nights of paws in my back or the dog sleeping perpendicular to us (even on a king bed the dog could take up the entire thing) put an end to that. Took us about a month to break her of the habit, but now she sleeps on the floor next to the bed.

Either your wife is really hot, or you've got some problems. Since your a State fan, I'll assume it's the hot wife.

I have a golden retriever who hops up and sleeps next to me until I fall asleep. Then he jumps down and sleeps on the floor. I love it!

Ha! I just asked my husband if we could get a King sized bed last night because of our 2 dogs. Some people might think it is stupid, but I'd rather get a bigger bed and have the dogs sleep with us. We manage with a Queen, but our littlest guy is getting to be a bed hog. We went thought it with our older dog too. He now sleeps at the end of the bed or on the floor, if it is hot out.

My favorite part of having them in the bed is in the winter when Jeff isn't in bed yet or in the morning when he has left for work and I am still in bed. Little warm snuggly heaters!

I know when I was still at home the dog [Boston Terrier TLE (3 legged edition)] slept in my parents bed with them. When they both got up early to go to work, she'd go crawl in bed with my younger brother, then when he got up she'd overtake (and yes, I do mean overtake) my bed. If she wanted to be somewhere and I was already there, she's paw or scratch me until I moved...

I've identified the problem.

Yeah, I know. He's a really good dog, but he is the biggest baby ever. We practically trip over him because he is at our feet all the time.

We do not let our 5 month old Shih Tzu sleep with us.

1) He will think he can go anywhere in the house
2) Wife has allergies.

I have 3 dogs and I love them dearly, but they are dogs and they don't get on the furniture.

We only let ours get on the bed and one couch in our den that we've deemed "her's". Other than that she's pretty good about not getting on anything else.

Sorry - cat guy. And all 3 sleep with us. We would feel lonely without them. Unless we're making snugglebunnyburgers at which time they are not allowed to watch.

My thoughts are, you guys obviously haven't been married very long if you get jealous of the dog getting more attention. Don't worry, in a couple of years you will be glad, because a man needs his sleep!

I have a cat and he likes to sleep in bed with us. When we get sick of him, we put him out and shut the door. We would have the same problem with him pawing at the door but we have a SCATMAT. It is wonderful! If you don't have one, it's totally worth the money. It's a clear vinyl mat that has different settings of "shocks" it will put out when stepped on. It feels like a static electric shock. Not painful, but not comfortable. Keeps our cat away all night long.

Dog sleeps on the floor. Dont really want a 100lb dog in my bed. Sharing it with the wife is hard enough. Sometimes we will get a cat up there who loves to lay between my legs as I sleep. It drives me nuts because I move about and I end up launching her.
