Does the B12 Tournament matter?

I don't get this. Do fans really find more meaning in losing the first round of the NCAA tournament, than winning the Big 12 tournament?

Hell, winning the Big 12 tournament brings me more joy than winning the R64 game, and losing in the R32. Joy=meaning. I'd probably put a Sweet 16 over winning the Big 12 tournament, but to say it has no meaning is absurd to me. If it brings you joy and you like watching it, it's meaningful. Watch the reaction of players & coaches when they win a conference tournament. You're telling me it was meaningless?

And spare me the "No one remembers who won the Big 12 tournament in 2015 crap.... No on remembers who made the Sweet 16 LAST year. No one remembers who made the Final 4 in 2010. Stop worrying about how fans of other programs remember your team. No one cares. I don't give a **** about a sweet 16 or elite 8 that Kstate, Baylor or Texas had 12 years ago and they don't give a **** about our Elite 8 run in 2000. I only care about how much enjoyment I get out of it. A Big 12 tournament run gives me a hell of a lot of enjoyment and I think 100% of Iowa State fans would agree.

Surly was triggered cause he said KSU last week cares more about winning regular season championships than ISU, even though it was pointed out that ISU and KSU both have 2 Big 12 Championships. Also KSUs are both shared.
and the one shared title was with a team who beat them 3 times that year...

The conference tournament has some sort of implications for like 90% of the teams. Only team it doesn’t is Kansas BUT even they could technically drop to a 2 seed if they lose Thursday.

Baylor and Texas could be playing for one seeds. WVU, OSU and TTU are playing for an NCAA birth, OU’s playing for a possible miracle week, and ISU and TCU could help their seeding. Kansas State? Surly says it doesn’t matter so they’re not playing for anything.

Somehow King McClure's opinion on this matters more to me than some random poster from Oskaloosa or Ft. Madison. As does Bob Knight's.

Indiana Coach Bob Knight says the Big Ten should resist a postseason basketball tournament because it would be bad for fans and weaken schedules. LATimes
Bob Knight is a nutjob.

I understand you may not have fond memories of your team's history in the B12 tournament. Allow me to jog your memory.

2022 - L on Wednesday (WVU)
2021 - W on Wednesday (TCU), L on Thursday (Baylor)
2020 - N/A but probably would have lost to Baylor
2019 - W on Thursday (TCU), L on Friday (ISU)
2018 - W on Thursday (TCU), L on Friday (KU)
2017 - W on Thursday (Baylor), L on Friday (WVU)

I could go further but I'm sure you know it doesn't get better. Cats have only been to the finals twice (2010 and 2013).

And I already said you don't know that. The field hasn't been set.
It hasn't been set, but the tournament committee has it drafted and moves teams around based on what happens this week. Its not like they get in a room on Sunday, and start putting teams on seed lines for the first time.

Of course it matters! All teams spend the conf. season jockeying for the top spot to have the best chance of winning the tournament. The tournament also provides a bit of a snapshot of who is currently hot and who is not, going into the big dance.

I think it used to be assumed that if say ISU went on a run and won the Big 12 tourney it meant they were playing great ball and would carry over to the next week.

Some years, that seemed to be the case, but imo 2015 and 2019 were prime examples that the NCAA tourney doesn't care what happened 5 or 6 days earlier.
There’s no connection between the two. But to say it doesn’t matter is a weak argument because technically if we’re going down that road, as long as you’re in the tournament, nothing matters.

This thread has run it's course. More passion here than I thought.

Then I guess that answers your question. It does matter.

Yes it matters. I've absolutely loved watching us win the Big12 tourney in the past. Really fun to win and a great memory. Nice to already be in the tourney so we're playing for seeding and a trophy. I'd put winning the tourney close to/right behind a sweet sixteen

It's a really fun weekend. But as far as how I look back at it, I take the Ricky Bobby approach. If you ain't first, you're last. So if you win the tournament, that's great and something to remember. But if you lose in the first round or in the championship game, it makes no difference.

IDK about that. I heard King McClure this morning say that players are tired of playing one another by now and just want to move on to the dance. He played at the highest level. I respect his views as a past player. Actually, his comments were why I brought the topic.

Frankly, I suspect fans care more than many of the players who have their eyes on something far more important. And coaches don't want tired nor injured teams going into next week.
Never heard of her.

You bet it matters watching the cyclones take over the power and light district and Kansas City barbecue

It matters in as much as if you are competing in it therefore you should try to win it but in terms of the the overall season, it doesn't mean a lot.

Sure it matters. It's a championship. Not a November trophy. A conference championship trophy. A date to add to the banners in Hilton. A team that will be remembered. Last year's team will be remembered because they made the Sweet 16. The Halliburton, Wigginton, Tucker, Shayok team will be remembered even though they lost in the first round to Ohio St. They were Big 12 Champions!! It means a lot if you win it.
