Do we throw deep enough?

Frankly I was thrilled we threw to the tight ends yesterday. I would like to see us throw in a few screens to the running backs.
So far that is something Mess was better at. Of course, as compressed as this offense has been for CPR's tenure, there is not a lot of openings to use the TE in the conventional manner.

This is the problem... Long Drives, and Yards DO NOT equal points. Big plays equal points. I saw a stat on saturday that showed there were 9 drives of 19 plus plays this year and only 1 of those equaled a TD. We cannot score, because we are scared to make or incapable of making big plays. Thats why I would not attempt a pass under 8 yards, unless the pass was your running game.

Other teams have long drives and score as well, the only problem in our conference is that they score faster than us. So long as we have a higher percentage of every drive coming away with points than our opponents, then we will be competitive. Increasing our percentage of drives ending with a touchdown is what we need to do a better job at. I don't really care how long it takes to score, just so long as we do. In every game, each team should have the same number of drives, the team that scores in more of those drives will win, regardless of how long it takes each team to drive down the field.

AL has great hands but he hasn't learned to use his size to bully smaller DB's. He isn't going to be a deep threat WR, he's a possession guy. When you compare him to the WR groups that Baylor and TCU have, he doesn't have the top end speed to consistently burn guys deep. Our WR group may be our biggest strength but it doesn't mean it stacks up to the top teams in the league. None of our guys do.

I don't agree. First, how do we know that Lazard hasn't learned to use his size to bully smaller DB's? Have we thrown him a deep ball all year? I also don't agree that he isn't fast enough to throw the deep ball to. Sure, he's not a burner but he's plenty fast and has actually gotten open deep multiple times this year. We just don't throw it there. When I watch Tech, TCU, Baylor, they throw it up to their guy whether he is open or not. They see single coverage deep, and they are going there. We don't do that.

Eh, I just don't see him getting much separation from DB's. I agree though we haven't tried to go deep to him much, the one time I remember was against Iowa in the 4th quarter. Sam actually made a decent throw, AL had almost no separation from his DB and couldn't make the catch. It was a a tough play but a play he SHOULD have made, he just didn't come down with the ball. It's a play the top WR in our league make routinely. It went virtually unnoticed but was a huge drop at a huge time of the game. I think AL will be a stud, he's come a long ways from last year when veteran DB's were able to bully him physically but he still lacks that explosiveness and strength to put him in a conversation with the big 12's elite guys.

Like everybody on here , we don't throw deep over the middle. We throw deep, but to the side or behind the line of scrimmage. Why not a 10-15 yard curl over the middle? Or a jump ball in the middle of the endzone.

We do not throw deep enough often enough. We have one of the best wide receiving corps in the Big 12. All our big plays happen when we are going right down the middle of the field. Especially against a cover 2. The middle is wide open all the time. Most zone's the middle of the field is the weakest point. To many short balls and not enough balls between 10-20 yards and more.

It was nice to see some throws across the middle yesterday. To me, that was an even more critical missing piece to our offense.

I agree that the throws over the middle of the field were very important and need to be used far more often. Also I liked that we saw some of the old school ISU running game. No zone read no zone blocking. That TD run was basic straight ahead football.
