Directv Deal

Call retentions and give it another whirl. As with most customer service call centers, it all depends on who answers the call.

Just to throw another wrinkle into this. I have been looking to cut cost because I really don't watch that much TV anymore with kids activities etc...

I like the Vikings so NFL Sunday Ticket doesn't really appeal to me.
I went with Dish Network and got the Turbo HD Gold Pack.
I get way more programming that this, but here is the majority of decent HD Channels I get below. I added DVR advantage and the Sports PAK which gives me all the Comcast and FoxSports stuff (every twins baseball game:). This package with tax is about $69 total. I put one Very Nice Dual DVR box in my living room that is hooked up to the internet and has a ton of hard drive space. They programmed my Master Bedroom to feed off my living room tuner 2. I split that and it feeds my Garage and Basement. So you just need to by a couple $20 UHF remotes. You can get more HD channels if you want to by the plantium or Movie channels, but all this for under $70 with tax is great for us. I could have saved another $10 bucks per month, but I would not have got versus.
The best part is...this is not a promotional price. Just thought I would pass this on. When my kids get older (2,5,8 currently) I will worry about more receivers.
So my bill is this:
Dish: $70 for what is above
Qwest: $40
Home phone by Magic Jack: $60 for 5 years of service w/ unlimted long distance.
I pay about $110 a month for everything. Not too bad.

Same thing happens with Mediacom and Qwest. They're nice to get you, and offer nothing to keep you happy.
 
I finally got around to checking on this offer...they told me it was for new customers. I asked why some existing customers were getting it too and she said most likely they are long time customers.

So no luck for me on this deal (been a customer for 3 years).

It's very easy to sign up for Directv if you're a new customer but you need to get EVERYTHING when sign up for the first time. If you decide later that you want something you usually have to kiss their butt and then they'll still charge you a lot. This means get an HD DVR for every room where you'll think you'll watch tv. They'll give them to you free now but they'll cost you $200+/piece later.

Also, when you have the install done make sure you get the person who installed it phone number. Make sure everything works before he leaves. Get the installer to run two cables to every room where you'll ever watch tv.


Also, you may want to consider starting out with a low package at first. They will always allow you to change your package up and spend more.

Instead of running cables everywhere consider having them install a swm (single wire multiswitch) setup. With this system I have 4 hd dvr's running off of 1 dish and was able to use the existing cable jacks in my house. This system saved the installer tons of time and the only drilling into my house was to mount the dish to my garage roof.

Kind of on topic ... couple months ago figured out that if you live out in the sticks like we do and have Iowa Telecom for phone, if you bill your Dish Network through them, you get a decent monthly discount. I can't remember off the top of my head - something like 10-20%. Whatever the number, it was worthwhile for us to save the money and have one less bill a month to pop in the mail.
 
FYI you cannot cancel the sunday ticket package Direct TV has. They told me on the phone once the season starts you cannot cancel it.

Than tell them along the same line that once the season starts you can't pay for it either....
 
Yeah they tried screwing me over today. I guess today is the last day for that package deal they have and so I went online to sign up for it, and I guess because my apartment goes through ICS I can;'t get there special offer even though I can get Sunday Ticket at regular price, so I tried to cancel sunday ticket after ordering it and they tried telling me that because I already signed up and the first week of football has been completed that they can not cancel it. Eventually I was able to get it canceled but for a second there i was seriously p offed.

Is this something exclusive to Directv or Dish. I have Directv and was told by the rep I talked to on the phone that for the upgrade to an HD DVR receiver they would have to run a second cable?
 
I don't believe Dish needs a 2nd wire and Directv doesn't promote the SWM but you can buy it on your own.
 
I called Direct and they gave me 10 bucks off my monthly bill for 6 months and free movie channels. Not bad for just making a quick phone call.
