Directv Deal

I got this deal last year. You can cancel everything but sunday ticket online. It was pretty nice, but I rarely found anything to watch on all the premium channels.

You won't lose your mchsi.com email account when you cancel unless I was the exception.

Mine stayed around for a few months. I started a new gmail account about 6 months before I knew I was going to switch so that i could transition over. I found it best not to get roped into another email account that had an ISP tied to it. You'd think I owuld have learned from my Prodigy days :)

Update: I found a thread on SlickDeals about this offer that may have some information in it that is of interest. It sounds like some people have haggled to get them to include Superfan free in the deal, too.

Now I have to haggle for superfan this year. That is a damn joke, $100 for HD? It is 2009!!

Keep this message.

It's very easy to sign up for Directv if you're a new customer but you need to get EVERYTHING when sign up for the first time. If you decide later that you want something you usually have to kiss their butt and then they'll still charge you a lot. This means get an HD DVR for every room where you'll think you'll watch tv. They'll give them to you free now but they'll cost you $200+/piece later.

Also, when you have the install done make sure you get the person who installed it phone number. Make sure everything works before he leaves. Get the installer to run two cables to every room where you'll ever watch tv.

Also, you may want to consider starting out with a low package at first. They will always allow you to change your package up and spend more.

According to the website, you get one HD-DVR free, over that they are $200 each.

Yeah, I was kind of hoping all these extra charges for HD would go away when nearly every channel was in HD. I guess not.

I just answered a call from Directv, thinking it was a call about a billing question I had...normally I wouldn't answer a telemarketing call. I'm glad I did, because they offered a killer deal that I actually took:

-5 free months of their premium package
-5 free months of Sunday Ticket

This will actually reduce my current bill by $6, since with the premium package, they waive the DVR fee.

I just have to remember to call and cancel in December, and I've set up a reminder in Google Calendar to do just that.

Thought some of you may want this, and now you can call and say that you want what I got! (I'm not sure why I was offered it, but it may be that I've been with them for a while.)

Do you already have Directv? or are you getting it now?
Also i'll be getting Direct Tv and if they offer that package, i'm going to take it in a heartbeat, but do you think they will try and stiff you with a cancellation charge?

I got Sunday Ticket for the entire season our first year on Directv, but the thing I've learned being with them is there is always a tendency for them to auto-enroll you in things. So, despite the fact I jumped through the proper hoops, the following year they started auto-billing me for Sunday Ticket. Had this happen on a couple other "offers" from them too.

I had the same offer back in 2007, great deal, but you do have to pay attention to the billing. In April or May you should see on your statement something about Sunday Ticket early renewal and will need to call then to cancel if they aren't able to cancel it in December.

I've had Directv for 7 years now.

There shouldn't be any cancellation charges. You only get a charge if you upgrade to a package, then cancel it within 30 days. Then it's a $10 charge.

That's why you haggle. Tell them you won't switch unless they sweeten the deal. I did that with dish and have two HD dvrs.

Week 17 of the NFL is Jan 3rd. Unless you plan on keeping the premium package, wouldn't it be best to wait until after August 3rd to call DirecTV? That way you can downgrade to a normal package before the 5 month "deal" expires and still watch all the NFL games.

I'm new to DirectTV...I've already got the sports package that includes FSN Midwest and a DVR...something doesn't seem right with this - what's the hook for DirectTV?

Hook, as in, "How am I going to get screwed over of DirectTV later?"

My guess:
1 - Try to get new customers
2 - Hope you forget to cancel your premium package
3 - Hope you forget to cancel Sunday Ticket. It auto renews for the next year at $300 in addition to normal programming.

It's screwy the way they "bill" you for this deal. Apparently, you will see a $59.99/mo. charge on your bill as if you have purchased Sunday Ticket. But your overall bill will stay the same, as they lower your base package price.

After I hung up, I got to thinking I heard something wrong, and thought I was swindled, so I called back and confirmed that I will have absolutely no additional charges. That's where I learned that I will have the DVR fee waived for 5 months, since it's part of the premium package, so my bill will actually be lowered for all of this. It seemed too good to be true, so I double-checked.

I'm not sure about the SuperFan thing. It wasn't mentioned at all, so I assume you would still have to purchase that.

So, does the HD-DVR service come in this package? That would be sweeeeet.

I think it does, but not positive. There has been more discussion about it at the link below.

I may need to speak to them about this. We already have the Choice Xtra package, or CHoice, well we chose something. I can look it up.

Impressive deal all the way around.
Yeah, I have Choice. I plan on signing up around August 10th so I have 1 week after the regular season ends to switch my programming back to something wallet friendly.

I tried, didn't get it, but they gave me Free Showtime for 3 months for the confusion. I did buy the nfl ticket, I didn't realize it won't be all in HD, what a load of crap!!!!
