Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives - Des Moines metro

We heard a lot of good things about it and went there, but was not really impressed by it. Just failed to get the woo factor with the food.
Latin King changed ownership sometime in the last couple years and recently had a slew of health code violations. It is not what it once was.

Tursi was a fantastic owner. I think he pretty much just helps his son down at Exile now.

Last time I ate there (20+ yrs ago) on our anniversary, I got the bill and noticed it was incorrect. Not the typical mistake of accidentally having something wrong on the bill (can and does happen) but rather the bill was incorrectly added by the computer (I am not making this up). I complained to the waitress who then brought me a new ticket with the correct total. I asked to talk to the owner. Tursi came over and asked how our meal was and I said food was fine, but I have a big problem with your accounting system as my ticket was totalled incorrectly by your system. He proceeds to say he was informed of the error - I then state this is a very very unusal error and can he guarantee it won't ever happen again. Tursi says he cannot and says hope you have a nice evening.

I am a formally training auditor - the only way a computer could incorrectly add up numbers is if it was programmed to do so (especially in a basic program like a restaurant system). Never went to another Tursi affiliated business again - who knows how many people have had the same thing happen to them. Simply not possible it was a random error.

Cactus Bob's in Johnston. Awesome BBQ that seemingly no one knows about.
We love their fried food and sides. But I don't waste money on the BBQ.
Flavory Bistro in Ankeny is top notch Mediterranean
Hector and his wife are amazing people. I'm embarrassed to say I never get down there even though I consider Hector a close friend. Need to make a point of going now, thanks for the reminder.

The Buffalo chicken sandwich at Cactus Bobs is top notch!

Maybe this is common knowledge, but I'll put in my my two cents for Smokey D's near Big Barn Harley, and Papa's Pizzeria in Polk City.
I assume Papa's is or was (haven't been in a few years) on the square and supplied pizza for NP events. If so I concur it's good stuff.

I hadn't been to Norwalk in probably 20 years but decided to try out a place new to us. Pyra Pizzeria. The order took a little of time but the pizza was solid. I'd give it an 8/10.

Back in my time as a student, Smokey D’s had a food truck set up on campus on Farm House Lane by what is now Troxel Hall. The best damn brisket sandwiches before class in Kildee.
