difference between plasma and lcd

I have both and love watching games on the plasma. Lights, etc, aren't a problem glare wise but a lot of sunlight would be an issue.
 
The tradeoff is plasma has a better picture.

If you told customers that, I feel sorry for anyone who bought from you. Most of that info is just wrong.

LCD's are backlit by florescent tubes. LED's are backlit (actually all but the uber top of the line are edge lit) by LED's of course. The diff between LED LCD and regular LCD is that LED versions can get a smidge thinner, and thus the WAF (wife acceptance factor) is higher. Plasmas are lit in totally different way with a charged wire that lights up colored gas filled chamber for produce the pixel of the correct color.

I have a 50" 720p Panasonic Plasma. I paid $699 for it almost a year and a half ago from Best Buy. I love it.

I have a dark living room. I do have a lamp in the corner which does cause some glare issues. The picture looks great. The temperature does get a little warm, but nothing alarming. If I leave the screen on a static picture for extended periods of time... like on a Netflix menu or something, the screen will "burn-in" a little bit, but after watching something else for a minute or two it is gone.

If I was in the market for a new TV, I wouldn't hesitate to go Plasma again.
 
Just bought a 46" LED from Target. HATED IT. I would watch a football game or any show with movement and holy ...... I couldn't take it any longer. I took it back and said it was poor quality which in my estimation it was. I've had plasma in the past and got another plasma. This great. I will have mediacom now and will switch to Direct TV in a month. My picture will be even better then. Plasma is a good route!!
 
just outa curiosity what brand, ICE.

I wouldn't trade my Samsung for anything. Good features too. Just wish I'd sprung for the one with the wireless built in have to run a CAT-5 to mine to get all the fun stuff. Just about every person that watches sports on it, has said holy crap that is an awesome picture.

Are you sure you don't mean LCD, because LED has eliminated just about every problem I had with my first LCD that I took back for a Plasma. And I loved my Plasma, except for the fade in brighness over the years. Unless you got the cheapest bargain LED you could find, I am suprised there could be that big of a difference.

Mine is like you took the energy efficiency and couple of other of the LCD's benefits and combined them with All the Plasma's benefits.

It was a Samsung 6000 46" LED The guy from American Electronics said the big box stores order so many TV's that they can build them differently. A tv bought at Sams, Walmart or target is not the same as one bought at an electronics store.
 
Obviously you "knownothing" about LCDs and Plasma :jimlad: A couple of the major differences between LCD and Plasma is Plasma tvs show a glare if your tv is in a sunny room whereas LCD does not. Also, plasmas tend to overheat and not live as long as LCDs. Hope this helps!

Also the fact that Plasma is about a three fold difference in picture quality. LCDs and the new LEDS will never catch up. Anything the LDC and LED manufactures do to mimick the output of an Plasma just makes it look worse. Also, LEDs look worse than LCDs IMO.

For what its worth, I have a 63" inch plasma, properly worked it in when it was new, and I have never had 1 overheating issue. I know that was a problem with earlier models, but I haven't heard of a case of it recently. As for life of the TV, I would say that comes down to a lot of factors, average usage per day, type of content...etc.
 
Of course, I am a bit biased, and very much a video and audiophile.

Except for the height speakers, those are 10" drivers in the mains and center. Sub is a 15" :yes:

This effect is one of the most annoying things in the world. It jumps right out at you. It drives me nuts when you point it out to people, and they sit there asking what you are talking about.

Also the 120hz LED shouldn't be compared to the 600hz plasma. Both process it differently.
 
LED TVs are just LCDs with an LED backlight, usually edge lit. The benefits they offer is a more even lighting, energy efficiency and are very thin. The technology for the display is the same though, just a different light source. The full array back lit ones can reproduce black levels better than most LCDs but are very expensive.

Within 10 years everyone will have probably switched over to the AMOLED screens anyway. They are supposed to start mass producing these in a couple years but they will start out at a very high price point. They are limited in size right now too but those problems are being fixed.

The soap opera effect is very bothersome to me too. My roommate doesn't even notice it. I shut off the interpolation setting (can't remember what his Samsung called it) so I am curious to see if he notices the difference. If he doesn't I'm just not going to tell him so I won't be so bothered watching movies on that tv.

Do LED's have uneven lighting? Yes. Do they have as good of contrast? No. Do their colors pop? Yes, but they are overly bright. As stated above, the real reasons for LCD/LED are energy usage, usage in non-light-controlled rooms, and the aesthetics of being thin.

The colors don't have to "pop" you can change the color settings.

Yes, soap opera effect is from the frame interpolation and is what can take away the cinematic look and makes things look like a soap opera or behind the scenes footage. It usually can be turned off or adjusted. It can appear in 120 or 240 Hz televisions.

LED's really won't burn in (unless under extreme circumstances) but more frequently get stuck or dead pixels. Still not often though until later in the TVs lifespan.

The picture itself refreshes at 60hz though which is at least double the frame rate you will be feeding it. LCDs can be refreshing the TV at 120 and a few at 240 (most 240hz TVs you see in the store are not a true 240) but the mechanical effect of the individual pixels opening and closing doesn't keep up, which is what gives you the blur or ghosting.

Yea, I saw that SOE and thought something was wrong with my TV, but turned it off and everything looked better. Who would ever want that?
 
Note on the glare "issue". Not all of the LCD type TV have the matte finish glass. More of the newest LCD/LED Tvs are coming out with glossy screens like the plasmas..I have a pretty sunny room and have a Panasonic plasma but rarely watch morning TV so not an issue for me since by noon the sun isn't blasting through the windows.
 
For the sake of argument lets just say that LED is "better" than plasma. It sure as hell isn't enough to substantiate the price difference. I'll have two tv's while you can have one. No skin off my teeth.

Plasmas don't have to have a glossy screen. You can get models with a matte screen. The picture is much better to my eye on the glossier screen. I have mine in a fairly bright living room. No issues. If you care about a good picture you don't watch TV in sunlight anyway.
