Did Fred mess up not taking Peter Jok?

Is this post because of any inside info you have, or is this just based on looking at Rivals and seeing Jok didn't have a ISU offer. I have said as much, but some seem to insist that it is only because of the stuff pulled by Lefty and imply they have some inside info on that.

It's common knowledge for anyone that followed his recruitment. Jok was not a touted recruit at all at the end of HS and it looked like he was going to sign with Drake. Creighton seems to offer any Iowa HS Basketball Player that's decent and they didn't even offer him. Iowa missed out on a couple guys, most notably EC Matthews, and Jok was a fallback recruit. They offered him, he visited right away and committed to them. The only chance he would have ended up with an Iowa State offer if the Lefty Moore situation didn't happen was if he wanted to sign in Spring so people could see how his senior year went. Most Hawkeye fans were surprised Fran offered him in the early signing period

It's about time someone put this out there. So sick of the hindsight is 20/20, we would have gone after a recruit rated sub 200 with only two other offers if not for lefty moore bs.

Summary: No, you don't have any insider knowledge about this at all.

Fred liked Jok and he liked Fred, but he wasn't the type of player that you push your luck with the NCAA on.

As it worked out we have Naz, Thomas and Burton through next year so even though an added player would have been nice this season we don't really have a hole at the position that he plays.

All in all it seems like it worked out for everyone and I'm glad to see him succeed there. He seems like a nice kid.

No, I use common sense instead. Anybody that followed his recruitment thought he was going to go to Drake unless he waited to sign in the Spring. I think he even came out and said most schools told him they wanted to see what he did his senior year. He had a horrible junior year and an unimpressive AAU circuit the summer before his senior year, Fred was not going to offer him.

Fred like Jok's game from what I heard at the time and we would have taken him without the Lefty situation. You're not correct here.

Jok is shooting well, but I'd take what Matt brings over him.

Yep. If there were five players on the floor, I'd want Jok on the roster. But since there's only one position, I'm glad we have Matt too.

Ok, so you are saying Fred offers if Lefty doesn't improperly contact Jok. I am assuming you have someone in the know about this?

Not necessarily. I'm just saying things might have turned out differently, no one will ever know. Fred could have been trying to get Jok to grey shirt or walk on for all we know. Or he could have been a fallback recruit or a fallback to a fallback no one knows for sure. The only thing that is certain is that the story ends when potential violations became apparent.

I've heard Jok wanted ISU pretty badly, so the grey shirt/walk on theory is plausible.

If you don't know, quit going around stating it as fact dude, it just makes you look stupid. If you think you can know everything about recruiting by "using common sense", then you actually have no clue on how recruiting works.

For instance Michigan fan will tell you it is "common sense" that Michigan pulled Chase Allen's offer as "common sense" tells you that Michigan beats ISU every time in recruiting. Sorry, but I have some knowledge of this situation, and it is a FACT that Michigan did NOT pull the offer, but Allen told them he was going to ISU, and Michigan just did damage control by saying they pulled their offer.

So excuse me if I don't consider your "common sense" BS as knowing all of the facts about Jok.

I love Jok but this was a **** poor effort by Iowa. Defensive intensity was absolute garbage. They're looking like an entitled bunch of guys who are letting the # next to the Iowa name on the scoreboard get to them. Lazy effort tonight. Not good.

they seem to play to their opponents. Good or bad.

It almost feels like you guys are coordinating your trolls on us here. These posts are 100% pure CF posts. Well played.

Thomas is a very good player, but Jok may be all Big Ten.

Thomas would beat out Jok for a spot on the All B1G team but for the minor detail of Thomas not playing in the Big Ten. Hell, if I had a vote i might vote for Thomas over Jok anyway. I'm not saying that Jok is a bad player, I'm saying that with Thomas & Long we didn't need him as much as other teams did.

What are you talking about? I'm not doing any damage control. I'm pretty positive Jok even said schools that were talking to him told him they wanted to see how his senior year went but then Iowa offered and he committed right away. A lot of people were shocked when Iowa offered. I don't see any way that Fred would have offered in the Fall after his AAU campaign. I guess I can't see that with 100% certainty but you really can't say that in recruiting since things are so fluid and there's so many rumors out there. Common sense would say Coach Cal wasn't going to offer Brady Ernst in July if we didn't get him in June but I can't say that as a fact.

Not getting Uthoff was the bigger miss

This. Uthoff is one of the top 5 players in the country this year.

Also, Jok is a great player and I would take him on my team in a heart beat, however it will be interesting to see how he does when he is the focus of the defense.

I would say Jok's development is further evidence of Fran's ability to take average-rated recruits and develop them into some of the top scorers in the B1G - and make them excellent role players of a cohesive team. As much as I hate to admit this, I have to accept it, because look at the player development of the past few years.
Jok ain't gonna carry a team on his back, but neither can any of the current Iowa starters - but collectively they can play excellent team ball and know their role.

I asked if you had insider knowledge on the situation. You are trying to say that your "common sense" is all the information. If you think that, you don't understand recruiting at all.

Someone on here knows, people are tied to the program and get details. Not a big deal really, I'm perfectly happy with the players we have. Just asked for inside knowledge and find it funny that you think you can tell everything that goes on in recruiting by your "common sense". LOL.

I have no insider information that Brady Ernst wasn't going to be playing for Coach Cal this year if we didn't offer but I'm confident saying that wouldn't happen. Abrahamson we wanted though and couldn't take him because of Lefty

Pretty sure Fred wanted Peter Jok but stopped recruiting him after a grad assistant was at one of his games (which is illegal) so we stopped recruiting him to avoid NCAA penalties. Whether we would have gotten him or not, I dont' know.

Fred also wanted Uthoff but he was set on Iowa from the beginning.

This is correct according to ISU when they self reported violations. Fred walked into an AAU tournament that his daughter was playing in. Peter Jok was also playing in the tourney. Lefty - a coach that was hired by McDermott shortly before he left - was there (he was a coach for All-Iowa Attack). Fred knew that Lefty wasn't supposed to be there. That led to the discovery that Lefty had impermissible contact with a total of 5 potential recruits through his coaching at the All-Iowa Attack. ISU immediately stopped recruiting all of them, fired Lefty and started an internal investigation.

Now you just sound stupid. There was contact between Fred, the staff and Jok, that much we know for sure. We also know that there was improper contact between Lefty and Jok. I just wanted to know if Fred offers if there is no worry about NCAA violations. This takes some insider information on the situation, and you obviously don't have any of that.

Like I said, no big deal, but man oh man, you certainly don't like to be challenged do you? I mean for a guy who has zero ties to the school for information, you certainly do think you know everything that goes down recruiting wise. LOL, that is hubris at it's best.
