Dennis Dodd Article on Cyclones

I remember challenging him in the interview. 'Is your next job a transaction or a calling? If it's a transaction, go somewhere else … but if you're up for a calling that nobody has never done or has failed trying to do, then come do our job.

"'They'll build statues for you if you can do it.'"

Pretty ballsy pitch right there from pollard in Campbell's interview.

He is wrong on never having an undefeated month. We have had at least 4 or 5.

Great post.

Dennis Dodd goes way back in his coverage of the Big 12, so he is not just a johnny come lately. He is a Mizzou alum, and from Overland Park, KS. Pretty sure I saw him on the CMC weekly press conference video this week, so has done his homework.

The national media sites really like the Marchie Murdock picture from the Kansas game, which I think, for years to come, will be seen as the iconic photo of this era. Dodd's video closed with it. It basically says, "Hey, we're on the map now. Deal with it!":

It's not a lie.

I think Pollard makes a solid point about the lack of tolerance in the SEC and big name schools. What Campbell has done at ISU is amazing, but:

1: it is not going to fly everywhere. His grounded, midwest value plan probably wouldn't sell well on the coasts.

2. everything in life is a factor of outlying conditions. Campbell has a great plan and message, but it is the guys like Lanning, Lazard, KCM, and Montgomery that changed the culture in the off season. Guys that are sick of losing, and took it upon themselves to put in the extra time over the winter to be better, and bringing some other guys along for the ride. Special players, great coach, good times.

3. Campbell has set a very dangerous precedent for himself. "If he can turn crappy ISU into a conference contender in 2 years, he should be able to get Blueblood U to the NCG in 2".

Doesn't let the players go to bars during season.... has any other coach implemented similar policy?

We have had undefeated 30 day stretches and months (august) and undefeated months that included a tie but I think he said a full month where we won every game... I can't think of one.

I'm guessing Dodd meant no undefeated months in conference play in 80 years (ISU went 5-0 in October in 1938, as member of Big 6).

If he meant in general, he's way off. Going back only to 1960:
2002 (September, 4-0)
2000 (September, 4-0)
1989 (November, 3-0)
1981 (September, 3-0)
1980 (September, 3-0)
1978 (September, 4-0)
1976 (September, 3-0)
1972 (September, 3-0)
1971 (September, 2-0)
1970 (September, 2-0)
1965 (September, 2-0)
1961 (September, 2-0)
1960 (November, 3-0)

The 2-0 months could be considered marginal, doesn't compare to going 4-0.

This is about the only sentence by Dodd I disagree with in the whole story. Seiler is a legend because he was a one hit wonder.

That piece is some nice pub.

To be fair, Seiler also converted a fake punt pass for a first down on special teams in the 1990 win at OU.

So, he did at least two things.

Good point about Seiler. Everyone "around here" remembers Seiler.

Dodd also is inaccurate with "... (Seiler) broke free for a 78-yard run for the game's only touchdown." Actually, he didn't score, his run set up the TD.

I keep nitpicking around the edges. As you said, excellent pub-piece. ... I also learned new info about Kempt's family background.
