Debatable Targeting and Obvious Facemask Penalties

I understand the rule but it would be good if the rule had like another option to the foul. Like flagrant 2 or something. and that would be the ejection part. Very subjective tho...
But to kick him out of the game like that is the equiv of 10% of his season. They could make the rule ejecting the player for the remainder of the current quarter and the next. Then young would have been back for 2nd half

It's obviously not right. Some think the ejection should be something the referees have discretion on. I don't know if that's better.
Not with Big 12 refs discretion...we kind of know what side (blue bloods) they'll favor if it's "their discretion"

There is absolutely now way I want to give refs more leeway to make judgment calls. Zero.

That face mask on Purdy was more dangerous than the hit. The face mask helicoptered Purdy. That means the player knew he had it and still used it. If you want to be 100% player safety, that should be an ejection also. I would be satisfied with a half for ejection.

1) The targeting call was the correct interpretation of a bad rule.

2) Purdy late hit push was ” 50/50“ but given the other calls, I thought he’d get it.

3) The offsides was completely Iowa State’s fault. When they jump into the neutral zone you have to either snap it or flinch to get the penalty. Just hoping the refs call it isn’t enough. They call it without contact in the NFL, not in college.
Agree on #3. I was angry with the offensive line there.

I don't mind the targeting rule..... except for the ejection part of it. That is way too harsh IMO.

Maybe kick a kid out if they get two targeting calls?? I'm not sure if I even agree with that though.

But something does need to be done with the hits to the head in the game. Especially the lowering of the head and using the helmet as a weapon to try to purposely injure someone. I hate that.... and it is so lacking of tackling fundamentals.

The game, and the coaches around the country, really need to teach kids to see what they are tackling. Keep your head up. It's a horrible way to tackle, and is also very ineffective as you see guys bouncing off those hits and staying on their feet because the defender didn't wrap up. The other thing that happens when you go in to make a tackle and lower your head.... you get jumped over and made to look like an idiot.

I'd say either remove the ejection or make it two targeting penalties in a game or a certain amount over the year and you are ejected or something like that. But Isheem getting ejected for a pretty clearly unintentional hit to the head 30 seconds into the game is absolutely criminal and I feel awful for the kid. Could end up being the only championship he ever plays in (I certainly hope not) and he got to play two plays. Bull ****

Agree, the receiver could have gained his footing and Isheem couldn’t just stand and watch if he did or let him keep his balance for another 4-5 yards and then fall down.

I view an obvious facemask like a obvious foul in basketball, if the committing the foul/facemask player knows it is going to get called then make the most of it.

And in basketball an intentional foul gets you bounced most of the time. I’m not saying the face mask should, but don’t see how you can eject Isheem when he is making a play and tries to pull up whereas a guy has a face mask and continues to use it. I don’t think either of those situations yesterday should have been an ejection. Just that they are both similar in danger to the player.

They don’t call it without contact in the NFL without contact. The ball has to be snapped or an offensive player needs to jump due to the contact. You can jump and get back without contact in the NFL.

Maybe you could make it a 15 yd penalty and kick the kid out for the rest of that series or something? Kicking them out for the entire game is stupid though.

I agree with this. I thought Ramos and Simmons were both engaged high on the guy, like any double team. Just that Ramos came from a deep knee bend because he slipped or was off balance. Was not the typical high-low that tge rule is intended to prevent.
I thought that watching too but then in the sideline it looked like MC was tearing into Ramos. Maybe not related.
