DeAndre Kane visiting next week

Per the CF one-on-one interview with Coach Hoiberg, Fred was quoted as saying that Sadler was an important get because of his connections to JUCOs and "We will have four of them on our team this year. That is something again that was attractive about Doc."

So our JUCOS include:
Bluford, Edozie, Amardi, Hogue --- as of Friday a.m., they are still on the team -- according to CFH.

The only JUCO we can lose is Endozie (and for the record, I do not want to lose him). But we need impacts from the other 3, at least, next year. Hope they all make it... But yeah, just not sure where that schollie is coming from.

Yes, I agree in retrospect. But I read the "on paper" clause to mean how it looked from a preseason standpoint, and there were legitimate questions that were answered last year (Clyburn's role/is Clyburn a big 12 player/is Clyburn strong enoughEjim's ability to shoot well enough/Lucious's turnover ratio/overall team DEFENSE/rebounding).

Preseason, there were questions. Although I agree with you that they were answered throughout the year and the team ended being great and so much fun to watch.

I know most people thought Clyburn wasn't proven going into last year but I have absolutely no idea why anyone thought this. He had the most impressive stats in the entire MWC his last year he played there and it's a top six conference. Some of our own fans somehow thought an MWC transfer with much worse stats in the same conference was going to help Oklahoma more than Clyburn would help us. Always completely baffled me.

Strictly on paper....Korie was a true PG while Kane is filling a role with combo guard skills. That right there, on paper, gives the edge to last year's team in a preseason look.

Still excited about 2013/14 and I don't want to dwell on comparing to last years players vis player comparison.

knowing what we know now, that is easy to say. But last summer this team wasn't known to be what we know them now to have been!

Definitely, and given the way we build our team every year (which I like) we'll always have big preseason question marks.

You can't ignore how much better Ejim has gotten when comparing these teams. Two years ago he was a hard worker who needed polish, now he's the best rebounder in the Big 12 with a much better offensive game and shooting touch. No comparison between him as a sophomore and him going into his senior year.

What are Kane's turnover numbers?

I remember that. M'Baye ended up being very good but I'd take Will the Thrill every day, especially in our offense. He will be truly and sorely missed.

I agree it COMPLETELY changes the dynamic of the team going into this offseason. I think Niang and Ejim are guys that young guys can look to as a "sure thing" and an example to follow, and good teams/programs need a steady supply of a least a couple guys like that on every roster on a yearly basis.

Although I'll give ya the argument that Korie was a "true" point guard on paper last year, he certainly had the reputation for being anything but consistent. In particular, I remember hearing grumblings about his ability to share the ball/lackluster defense/taking too many bad shots/overall intensity level. Typically, guys who have a reputation for these things are not often also characterized as a "true point guard".

That being said, all those people ended up being flat-out wrong about Korie. He was great.

But I think the conference will be down next year so we can still finish 3rd with less talent. In fact, I think we had a realistic shot at 3rd even without Kane. OSU and KU should be really good, if not great teams. Then us and Baylor. Then everyone else. Texas and WVU are running players off. OU and KSU can't be anything but worse. They both lost so much from this past year. TCU and TTech can only go up but they both have a looooong way to go.

So, team may not be as good but finish higher than last year.

I wouldn't necessarily say less talent. Next year's team will have less experience but looks to be in the same ballpark talent wise IMO. Clyburn and McGee were both ultra-talented; Lucious and Babb were talented but more key due to their experience.

15ppg and the minutes that come with it for 3 years straight, I'd expect a fair amount of TOs, I guess we'll know when we see his first few games if it's excessive.

Hope he plays in the Cap City League.

What are Kane's turnover numbers?

ESPN show 4.2 TPG last season.

However, it will probably be different based on the style of the offense and his role in it. He was the first or second scoring option for Marshall, so some of his turnovers and lower shooting percentages probably stemmed from pressing the issue and trying to score. He should have more help on this ISU team so he can focus more on distributing which may make a difference.

It's all relative.

Yeah, and 7.0 APG to go along with them. Not too bad for a guy who is averaging 37 minutes a game (most on his team) and also scoring 15.1 ppg (2nd most on his team).

For comparison, KL, who did a great job for us last year, averaged 5.6 APG, 3.3 TPG, and 10.1 PPG in 31.1 minutes. KL also shot sub-.400 FG%.

Here is an outsiders view of the Kane ISU commitment... (Gotta like the "breathtakeing in his abilities description")

Evaluating DeAndre Kane to Iowa State

"In Kane the Cyclones get a big (6-4), accomplished, point guard who at moments is breathtaking in his abilities. He can score, he can break down defenses, he can deliver highlight reel passes. But he's always on the edge of playing out of control, and he crosses that line far too often. He's also a very emotional player, which can quickly become an obstacle."

Playing for a bad Marshall team, Kane pretty much was the offense. He averaged 15.1 points and 7.0 assists, but his scoring was primarily through volume. He took over 26% of the shots when he was on the floor (far more than any ISU starter), and only made 25% of his 3s. He was also one of the best players in the conference at getting to the line, but only made 52% of his free throws.

I doubt Hoiberg would slip up in an interview and spill the beans where a scholarship is coming from. I'm not surprised he said 4. Before Okoro transferred I'm sure he would have listed him among the other guards returning.
