Deadspin in a tailspin

I see someone came out on Twitter as going to work for Deadspin and was already mean-tweeted into not taking the job. Kinda supports the whole thinking they are martyrs thing...

If you're going to bring this up, at least tell the whole story. The guy apologized profusely saying he'd never had any kind of community support at any point in his career, and if he'd known how many people cared about that much about the site he never would have taken the gig.

Deadspin writers aren't generating hundreds of mean tweets. Its readers are.

The guy posted he'd never send a mean tweet again in his life because of the responses he gets. And I know it wasn't the writers themselves, but it's all stemming from this ridiculous "victim" mentality, as though they were forced to leave their jobs or something. Them all feeling they need applauded for having their "I am Spartacus" moment.

And maybe I'm more upset about "cancel culture" in general than the Deadspin writers. Here you have a guy that says "hey, I can handle just writing about sports" and the Twittersphere tears him to shreds. It's ridiculous.

Agree to disagree, I guess. But substitute "Cyclone Fanatic" for "Deadspin" in this story and odds are you'd be sending mean tweets to the scabs too.

Huh? You don't think the people who are pissed aren't pissed because of the corporate censorship they attempted?

This is where you lose me. This isn't "corporate censorship". It's new ownership deciding which direction they want to head in. It's ownership saying "this is the type of content we want to publish now." How is that censorship? You really think these writers should be guaranteed to be paid to write whatever they feel like writing?

You can play with semantics if you want, they were told to "stick to sports" or be fired. Again, do you really think the people that are mad aren't actually mad about that?

It's a very bizarre conclusion, I'm curious how you got there.

It is censorship, but that word is so strongly associated with freedom of speech arguments I don't like it when people use it in these situations. The fact is we are all subject to censorship every day by our employer.

This stuff happens in the work world every day. Business's go in new directions all the time and you have to decide if you are comfortable with it or if you want out. The corporate folks decide all the time "i know you are used to this, but we are going to go in this different direction", and employees can either go with them or leave.

How is this any different than a company that sells books being bought out by a company that sells tablets, and telling the sales people they can all stay if they are willing to start selling tablets? I don't see where the journalism component changes anything.

This concept that they should be paid to write whatever they want, and if not allowed to do so, they are being censored is comical.

I guess now I'm curious. Let's say, hypothetically, that the new owners of Deadspin do their research and conclude that it is undoubtedly bad for business to mix politics and sports. How should they handle this situation?

I hope he does some version of the Jamboroo as well. I don't know if I can survive without my Jim Tomsula Lifehack of the week.

And the Hater's Guide to the Williams-Sonoma catalog. We were already deprived of it last year when he broke his brain.

Did you ever watch Foodspin with Drew Magary and Albert Burneko? Those guys were great together

Thanks for the link. I'm so glad these folks are back, even if it's temporary

No, but I'll check that out. I've been reading Magary's stuff on Gen and vice.

The Barstool people are human trash. Dealt with them professionally too, and they are even bigger piles of trash then their public persona, which is saying something.

If you think Deadspin was ever just about sports you missed the point of it. I bet Magary ends up at the Ringer or the Athletic. As long as I get my "Haters guide to William Sonoma catalog" and "Why your team sucks" I will be ok.

Strong opinion. I don't read blogs from barstool often. I am more of a fan of specific personalities they have hired and their podcasts/Sirius station. The personalities that just had them valued at over 470 million dollars.

Deadspin readers/fans were brainwashed into hating Barstool. You got fed constantly that Dave Portnoy was some misogynistic sociopath that would sacrifice anything to boost his ego. While some of the things he says and does is across the moral line, the majority of it is his schtick.

What I saw from Deadspin this past year was a lot of jealousy. Jealous that Barstool was at the point they would never be at. Weather you like them or not it's the truth. I think at some point you have to respect it. Especially in this day and age. But they continued to fire bullets until they ran out.

Interesting. I know they're a little different than the Athletic but it's still going to be hard for them to make a go at it, IMO.

Oh, yeah. A media startup is a roll of the dice under any circumstances, and to try and do it without any VC backing seems like a longshot. But I liked their content back in the deadspin days and I'll probably pony up for the subscription for however long it lasts.

The big difference is that this exact staff has a years-long record of quality content and a dedicated, fanatical readership. Ad-supported seemed like a safer bet for this pre-pandemic, but if anyone can pull it off, it’s this group. I do wonder if the launch is timed around non-compete agreements expiring.
