daycare provider fired???

She probably deserved to be disciplined and yes, even fired. You can't ignore the company rules...even if its for a worthwhile cause. She should have asked management to make an exception in this case.

That said, she did the right thing in my opinion. Helping people in a time of need even if it would cost her career shows what kind of person she is.

To this company in Michigan: 1 week of free daycare? Really? For that kind of tragedy? Wow. You deserve all of the negative PR you'll get from this. Thankfully the lady didn't take the hush money and they'll lose a lot of money. Business is about more than just money sometimes...and this is one of those times.

She'll be just fine. I'd hire her in a second if I was in that line of business.

Obviously she did the right thing morally, helping out someone in need like that. But I can see where the daycare company would not want to allow that, I imagine there could be liability issues of having a kid there that's not on the books so to speak, insurance wise or whatever.

I am all for taking part in a donation effort to help this daycare provider. I am also all for taking part in any kind of campaign that can be done to bombard the ******** that fired her with letters or emails to let them know just wrong they are for taking the action they did. They as a business in Ankeny are a part of the community just like all of the people that reside there. When tragedy strikes a member of that community it is time for people to pull together to take care of one of their own. Apparently they didn't get the memo and they should be made aware that if they want to be a part of the community they can either participate like everyone else or they can take their business somewhere else. :realmad:

This is straight off of their website...

From our dedicated teachers to our administrators and support staff, everyone at Childtime is committed to:
  • Providing a secure, caring and enriched environment that promotes learning and the development of the whole child.
  • Developing lifelong relationships and creating family solutions that enhance the quality of life for our children and their families.
  • Providing a fun, challenging work environment that fosters teamwork, inspires excellence and encourages contribution by all team members.
  • Leveraging technology to develop innovative learning products and solutions.
Apparently the people that ultimately made the decision to terminate this employee need to go back and read their mission statement again. Apparently they skipped over the second bullet point. Is this not the description down to a freaking T of what this employee did for a family at her facility?

I see both sides of the argument. The company probably handled this wrong, IMO.

-The lady was wrong for doing this behind their backs. If she had a problem with the one week, she should have said so and argued her point better.

-If I were here manager, I would have written her up for disobeying orders and such, but wouldn't have fired her because obviously this is a PR nightmare, and due to the fact that I would have a hard time firing someone because they were charitable.

This is all well and good and the employee did an honorable thing but in this day in age doing an honorable thing when its against a company's policy will get you fired. The economy is still not recovered and unemployment is still sky high so they will find someone quickly to fill her position. You may not think that losing 5,000 dollars in the long run is a big deal but when places are closing down at a record pace then every dollar counts.
I'm sure the employee believes that what she did was what had to be done but knowingly going against your employers for a long period of time will get you fired.
It's just business as usual.

The average cost of child care in DSM for a 3-yr old is $200 / week. Per the article, she gave them free child care from May 2010 until March 2011, roughly 40 weeks or $8,000.

"The free care lasted from last summer until the DeJoodes took over payments in March."

I applaud her for standing up for what she believes in, and appreciate her stance, but from a business side, $8,000 is a very nice donation to make to one family, and what happens the next time this happens, does that family get the same thing?

so, if i embezzled thousands of dollars from my employer and donated them to a charity close to my heart, would i be a hero? or would they be justified in firing me.

See if this makes you feel any different about this...the fired provider is a huge Hawk fan:shocked:(according to a thread at HawkN).

Truthfully I wouldn't have cared if he was a Twins, Packers, Hawkeyes, and Nazi fan. He was justified in his firing.
Well he may not make it too long if he was a Nazi, in retrospect.

I read the entire thread over at HN and I didn't see anything about the women being a huge Hawk Fan. As posted above what difference does that make? Miller actually mentioned something about CyFanatic in his post.

Oh wait I can make analogies too!!! Here let me make one up quick:

If I stole money from a rich man and then used it for the poor like Robin Hood, is that ok?

duh. anyway, i agree she did the "right" thing. but giving away free services is not differerent than embezzling. and the reaction that she's is a hero is pure emotionaly response. and yes, Robin Hood is a great analogy. but how about if Robin stole from the Rich and did heroin all with all the proceeds?

Childtime sounds like a real swell company. They offered a whopping week of free daycare, yet they could afford to pay this woman hush-money when they fired her? It would be pretty interesting to hear how much they offered her. Somehow I'm betting it was more than a week's worth of daycare.

You are asking like it happens frequently for this company let alone in general for something this tragic to happen.

The risk profile of this situation to EVER come up again is extremely small. In fact the $8k could have EASILY been made up handled correctly. In fact, it still could be. The news /p/r time of the company going back on this would garner $50k worth of PR in about 10 minutes.
