Girlfriend went to HS with him in Clinton, and she said he was very skinny coming out of HS. Wanted to stay in-state, hence lack of out of state offers, and Iowa/ISU both wanted to recruit him to play other positions. UNI was the only school that recruited him as a WR/RB.

His girlfriend should know but it seems like he had offers from UNI and an Illinois school for a long time and waited to commit until it finally became clear that Iowa and ISU weren't going to offer. If it was clear he wasn't wanted as a running back by the big schools why didn't he make his commitment to UNI earlier? I had watched Johnson play and was really hoping he'd be a Clone, and it just seemed like he kept waiting to the very end for one of the big schools to offer. I guess it doesn't make any difference now, but it would be interesting to know just why such a big talented Iowa kid didn't get offers from Iowa and ISU. He also seems like a team leader with no apparent academic problems at UNI. Just seems like a bad recruiting miss, which is bound to happen sometimes.

He would have been tied for the lowest rated recruit CPR has ever brought in at ISU. He was a player that everyone missed out on. It's not like it was Mack Brown only offering RG3/Manziel to play defense type situation.

Johnson was very good, but the horrible play of the ISU LBers and DEs really helped make him look all American. It will be interesting to see his numbers as the year goes on, because he is big, strong and fast. He runs a little bit straight up, but overcomes this with pure strength. His effort against ISU is a career records, so he has ether made great strides in the last year or the ISU defense has a lot of work to do. I am hoping it is the first, because it is going to be a very long season without massive containment and tackling improvements.

Poor CB Sam Richardson couldn't hit the deck fast enough to get out of the way on one of Johnson's first half TDs. It was comical.

I hadn't heard we wanted him as a linebacker but maybe that's right. But in the Clinton game I watched on TV he played running back and safety, had something like 4 interceptions, and ran 2 of them back for td's. He was all over the field on defense. He also had something like 4 more offensive td's, showing he not only was a great running back but could also catch anything thrown his way. It was the most dominant game I've ever seen a high school kid play. He could have been a big 12 or big 10 running back, wide receiver or safety, maybe even all big 12 at a couple of those positions. I suppose he could have packed on more pounds and made a great linebacker too, but a kid with that much size, speed and athletic ability needs to get the ball, which UNI is wisely doing.

That is actually pretty common in college football. Guys get recruited a decent amount to play different positions than they played in HS. Our loss is your gain
