I'm sure it was done to compete with KCCI. KCCI started their morning news for several years at 4:30 AM.

You'd be surprised at the number of people watching that early. It costs stations very little to air that extra half-hour of news & they get a little more ad time to sell.

truly love Des Moines…but I’m leaving Des Moines. I’m signing off from WHO 13 at the end of the month. It’s a hard decision to leave the familiar for a new chance in a new state, believe me. This city, state, and station have made me a better person…I’m grateful for it all.

I'm not sure why they haven't pre recorded the weekend and 9/10 pm news casts. Not that much changes from the evening news.
