Dam to Dam

What do people look for in a good pair of running shoes?

I used Kyle's bikes in Ankeny. They filmed me on their treadmill and did a "gait analysis" with pics and computers and whatnot. Don't know if that's the right way to do it but it sure seemed official.
I've been a football player and coach almost my whole life, I had been wearing my running shoes to fit like I would fit cleats. They got me in a pair 1.5 sizes bigger and it has changed the way my feet feel after runs a ton.

Go to a store that exclusively sells running shoes and get fitted. It's well worth it. A good place will put you in a pair of 'test' shoes and film you running on a treadmill to see what shoes to put you in.

Second that. Can't tell you how many brands and styles of shoes I tried before getting a professional fit. Makes all the difference in the world.

I also throw in a cushioned insole. I like my shoes to feel like pillows

A bit different but Im signed up for the warrior dash in Mid July.

Anyone do that?

I was on the site to sign up until I realized its the week before my wife is due. She doesn't like me to be unavailable that close to time. I want to do one really bad, i'll have my eye out after the bambino arrives.

Good running store like fitness sports would help.

At lot depends on how you run. I don't seem to under or over pronate so I just stick with a shoe that lasts a long time and is relatively stable. I've had good luck with the New Balance 990 series ( I think they are at 993). They last me about 500 miles. If you really want stability go with something like the Brooks Beast. After running with those for awhile any other shoe will make you feel like you're going to twist your ankle with every step.

I've ran multiple 1/2 marathons and 1 full at 230lbs.

I am runnnig too...I will be doing 8 miles for my final 'long run' before D2D. The most I went was the Drake Half Marathon.

I believe Thursday is hydration day and your most important night of sleep. Make sure to keep drinking that water on Friday too. This should alleviate a lot of issues on race day.

For training one or two days a week I do a 'speed workout on the bike trail in Clive. The 1/4 miles are marked so that helps. The other days I do varying distances (3-6 miles) for a total of 5-6 days running per week. I am hoping to get 1 hour and 30 minutes, I had 1 hour and 36 minutes in the Drake Half, that course seems easier then the D2D course though.

You should get a bump in your time due to race pace which I like! Listen to your body though, it may be hot that day and I do not enjoy the sun on the blacktop, even if it is 7:00 AM!

I'm in. This is my third time in as many years. I have a goal of 1:35, which would be a personal best. With the warmer weather earlier, I've gotten more early season training this year. I'm feeling good about hitting my goal unless the weather is really hot.

Ready to roll. Did 12 miles 2 weekends ago, a 10k last weekend, some running earlier in the week with a 3 mile "race pace" run on grass wednesday with yesterday and today just some walks. Enjoyed some pasta for breakfast this morning just because I could.
*Not a competitive runner at all, hoping to finish around 1:53-1:55 range.

That's what I'm shooting for too. Getting really nervous. Mostly about getting up that early, getting to D.M., parking, bus ride, etc...

At least it should be cool this year for everyone. last year i was sweating on the bus ride out to the dam.

If you aren't shivering at the start line in shorts and tech shirt standing still, that is always a bad sign. That is what happened last year. Already was sweating too before the gun even sounded.

Should be a welcomed chill in the air again this year.

Just finished a 12 pack of buds, hope I beat my 1:27 time from last year. Gotta carb stack.

Does anybody know when the buses actually leave? The website says from 5:00-5:45, but does that depend on which location you're leaving from, or could I still catch a ride at 5:45?

Good luck to everybody here, and I hope I don't walk at all!

How did everyone do?
I got through about 11 miles just fine and was going to be right around my goal, but man, the last 1.4 just killed me. Was feeling like puking the whole time and wasn't able to finish strong at all.
My 10k time was actually faster than the 10k I ran last weekend. Ended in 1:57 by my watch. Spent a lot of time early on trying to weave through groups of people running together. I can understand running with someone, but when you are going 4-5 wide (especially in this race), that makes it really tough on others.

I had a number, trained hard and was looking forward to it. Then, I had to have surgery on Wednesday. I was in Iowa Methodist up until 10 this AM, and wouldn't you know, they put the finish line just about below my room window!

When I got out, I went down there and handed back my timing chip (my wife picked up my race packet for me last night). I was a different kind of race for me, but my best finish ever!
