Anyone else find it strange that Cyler is ranked second? Did that many graduate last year at 57? I know he is no longer a Cyclone but he has ties. I was never overly impressed with his results and didnt feel he wrestled well in big matches. Maybe I am just being hard on him for leaving but I just dont see it.

He was always solid. Wasn't he ranked 6 or 4 last year? If he was still here, we beat Iowa both times this year, IMO. He always gave us a good kickstart in duals.

He has been AA once in three years. Maybe I am a little jaded by his NCAA results.

Yea, his finishes in long tourneys haven't been the greatest, but IIRC, 157 has been stacked the past 2 years as well.

He's a good wrestler, and I think because it's another weak link for us (and I think Iowa as well) this year, the view is a bit skewed.

Several of the top kids in the country graduated. Defending national champ at this weight class who owned Cyler last year is out for the year with torn knee ligaments.
Weakest weight class in NCAA this year.

my mind says if he was still here we would be favorites to win a nc, and probably would have already won national duals, but then i think-if cyler is still here, then cael is still here, and we aren't as aggressive at other weights. i seriously doubt ward and mueller would have improved as much as thye have if cael was still our coach.

Cyler must have lost a bunch of matches, he's moved down from #2 to #6.

I agree with "ISU BET" comments about Cyler and Cael.

Cyler only scored 5 pts last year at last year's nc, he'll score a few more points this year.

Hes lost two I believe. One to the Kid from Harvard whos rated #1. the second one was really recently but I cant recall the kids name who beat him.

OK, I haven't paid close enough attention, how is Cyler wrestling this year? He didn't have to sit out a year? The NCAA is just ****ed up.

he couldn't sit out a year, he's already redshirted.
If we didn't release him it would of been us or nobody.

That still doesn't answer how he got to transfer without sitting out a year (which, as you say, he couldn't). The only way I know is to get a hardship waiver, and I really don't think the coach quitting should apply.

Damn, it would have been nice to keep Cyler. He would be the missing link.

But, the Sanderson's have DONE alot for Cyclone Wrestling, all (3) of them.

Also, Cael probably could have taken more wrestlers with him to PSU than he did, Just my speculation.

What he means is shouldn't he have to sit out a year because he transferred. I have that same question.

For wrestling (and I think everything else other than football and basketball) you don't need to sit out if you are released from your scholarship. Clark has to redshirt at Iowa this year because we didn't release him.

Actually, he couldn't Melvin. He may have liked to, but Iowa State refused to release anyone except Cyler from their scholarship. Since most had already used redshirts, transferring would have meant losing a year of eligibility.

Didn't see if this was posted or not but you don't have to sit out a year for non major sports if you transfer. I think only football and basketball you do, but there may be others. Wrestling I know you don't.

Why did Clark transfer - was he not going to be able to break into the lineup?

157: #7 Jesse Dong VT dec. #2 Cyler Sanderson PSU, 5-4 (RT)

The win for Dong was Huge. Cyler kept trying to grab Dong. He tried Wrestling Dong. Everything he did and Dong just kept pushing and pushing. Finally Dong got on top. Cyler was interviewed after the match and said he should have "shaken the Dong" a little harder.

He would have had to sit out however we released him. Also if an athlete has already graduated they may transfer to any school to pursue graduate studies and do not have to sit out. Since Cyler had been in school 4 years he may have graduated I don't know. We did not release Clark. However he never redshirted so he could take his red shirt this year and not lose any eligability. I Don't think he would have made the lineup this year, but that being said I don't know if he will ever make the lineup for the hawkeyes they are very deep at every weight
