Cyclone Squad 17 Cyning Day Thread

starting to think our WR corp next year could be deadly, Lazard, Eaton, Jones, Ryen. Paired with hopefully one of the better offensive lines and depth at RB this offense could be potent in 2017
Not to mention Hakeem Butler! And Denver Johnson should be healthy, as well!

Interestingly enough, if you dive further into the 24-7 stats since 2010, Iowa State and Iowa have split the 8 years 50-50 with State having a higher average 4 times and Iowa having the higher average the other 4. Iowa State's average of .8409 this year was the 2nd highest during the same period, just slightly lower than last year's Iowa .8414. Iowa was better at bringing in top talent. It also shows that Iowa was better at developing talent than Iowa State over the years...that looks to change!

Significant improvement in the Big 12 recruiting battles is the bigger story...we've gone from near/at the bottom to #7 the past couple of years...and the gap between #3 and #7 is almost gone. Of course, one can find a negative here as the conference has dropped in overall talent.

Looking forward to the season and seeing what the staff can do! Assuming this staff is better at development, additional wins in the Big 12 will be coming.

This is a great post and some great observation. When you recruit in the 30-50 range, the difference is getting guys willing to develop and being able to coach them. It's been Iowa's method, but also the method of Kansas State, TCU and many other programs around the country.

Your point about finding a negative is one I was going to make in the "Closing the Gap" thread. While clearly good for us and our ability to compete on the field, the general talent level in the conference and particularly at OU and Texas decreasing is not good. While Oklahoma still did just fine with 18 4/5 star recruits, it is one of the things they point at as rationale for leaving the conference. They feel they are competitively disadvantaged in recruiting and national respect due to decreasing talent levels in the conference. Last year was not a great year for the B12 and continuing to get shut out of the playoffs (2 of the 3 years it has been in existence) does not bode well.

Tying the two points together, however, we need to be competitive in the conference, so closing the gap is a HUGE positive. If we can finish in the middle of the conference for 3-4 years and consistently make bowl games, we will get more consideration when the dominoes start falling about 5 years from now.

Great class, with a good mix and really good trench focus where it seemed more than not we were very thin last year.....
Now that the dust has settled any guesses on who the 4 are on current roster that are no longer around? right now the scholarship is 4 over the legal limit..... Not including if Milton ends up signing or not....

If that's true, it is so Pollard-like. Just celebrate a great class, don't need to stretch like that to create hype. I know it's only a poster/tweet, but some times the stuff we send out from the athletic department is cringe-worthy.

Ummmmm...what?

This is 100% accurate and why sure I love getting highly rated guys that picked here over another quality P5 program but it doesn't mean a hell of a lot if they come on campus and don't buy in and work their ass off.

Yes, ratings matter and the more 5 (no kidding) and 4 star guys you get the better chances you have to succeed but it's the middle of the road 3 star guys that NEED to develop for a program to turn around and start winning games on a weekly and yearly basis.

Depth is also a major part of that as well, not a single game was won yesterday those games are won this spring and (especially) this summer to prepare for the fall.

Have we ever before had a recruiting class with no RBs?

Seems that we stocked up on DLs at the expense of RBs. Not complaining. I like where we are both with RBs and DLs. Just making an observation.

We don't see the actual snap of the ball so I wonder if there was a whistle and it was a free play for the offense.
In high school, there are no defensive penalties that lead to the "free play" scenario like in college and NFL.

(OK, I can't say "no" scenarios. The only one would be illegal substitution or illegal participation on the defense, and you would have to have some amazing alert QB at that level to pick that up and audible into a deep pass)

Learn something new every day. Of course I haven't seen a high school football game in a long time.
