Cyclone Marching Band

Earl Bruce days.

Some guys from the band were in the lockerroom and Bruce tried to kick em out. Told em they Can't be in the iowa state university cyclone football varsity lockerroom.

Their response was well, we are the iowa state university cyclone football varsity marching band.

where does the "Varsity" come from? is there a JV band I don't know about?

I dropped off my kid in Ames today to leave for France tomorrow. They have some rehearsals tonight and early tomorrow morning, then they take some buses up to Minneapolis tomorrow to leave for Paris.

I wish I was going to watch them, but couldn't swing taking the whole family. I'm jealous of them.

Anyone making fun of band is a complete tool. What is there to make fun of? Because they are really talented and can play a musical instrument? Sure beats those kids like me in college who just got drunk all the time and did nothing. My kid will be marching in the D-Day Parade in Normandy, visiting Omaha Beach, performing at the American Cemetery, performing at the Eiffel Tower, and going to the Louvre.

That's 10x more than I ever did in college, and my kid has only been in college at ISU for one year. Who knows what else they will get to do in the next 3 years. Amazing.

my sister is going to play as well. Small world.

There are a LOT of former band members on this site. They pop up all over the threads. :)

To any current members that might be reading this thread - Congratulations on this honor. You make Cyclone Nation proud!

My four year ISUCF"V"MB (03-07) stretch had some rough spots but a lot of fun and interesting thing as well. Nothing close to France though. Very cool and glad they get that opportunity.

(Put me in the pep band criticizing group as well... but most basketball pep bands are depressingly corny.

Good for them! That is a tremendous honor and will be a memory they will remember for the rest of their lives.

From what I see, the criticism that get thrown out about the bands, comes from other bands. So it's not other people making fun of "band geeks". It's "band geeks" making fun of other "band geeks".

My daughter is also going[Allie's twin] and she puts in a lot of time to represent the university. The jv band consists of those who don't have the time to practice the shows or are fifth year students. I wish all a safe trip over and back. I know they will represent ISU and themselves to the best of their abilities.

Never seen the Varsity Band criticized here.

There are people that complain about the FB band too, I have seen it on occassion. It's not really the ISU band per se, but marching bands in general as part of the gameday scene. Usually folks that want more music over the speakers and less ISU Fight Song by the marching band. Like at a pro arena.

I am the opposite. College FB without a marching band is like a hot dog without ketchup.

Agreed - I'd rather have the band than the canned stuff for the most part. Unless of course we're talking about the University of Oklahoma...in which case, may they burn in the flames of Hell if they play Boomer Sooner one.more.time.

Since the marching band is the topic, I was wondering if they sell or have a cd of the songs/cadences they perform.
We have often wanted to have some of their music at the tailgate playing in the background. If anyone knows where I can get a collection of the songs they play at the games please share.

They used to have them available for purchase. I've got a couple from the band and at least two of the drumline. I was a drumline member from '04 to '06.

Unless it's changed since I was in band, they usually do a recording session at Stephens at the end of the year of various things they played that year. Usually, however, they'll wait a few years between issuing an CDs and then pick the best tracks from that stretch. I'd guess that if you called the music department there are probably still copies of whatever the last marching bad CD was that they'd be happy to sell you. They always include the main fight songs and cadences you'd want.

Ketchup on a hot dog is an abomination

Band does have a CD from last year and will probably have this years out this fall. Only snobs put mustard and relish on hot dogs, real men put catsup and onions on theirs.

Two points:
A. Definition of a university without a marching band; see Stanford.
B. Survey says, real men put mustard and onions on a hot dog.

A

Lots of posters on here were former ISU Drumline members. Know Scott Zureck well. Love what Steve Smyth is doing. Back in late ninety's and early 2000's Nick Hoover was a beast at ISU and currently is a beast teaching at DOWLING CATHOLIC.
