Ehh...Iowa would definitely not be the southern school in D1 hockey. Nebraska-Omaha, Alabama-Huntsville, Notre Dame, and Miami (Ohio) are just a few teams that are already D1 in hockey.
The only conference that would make sense as far as location would be the CCHA, and Iowa would have a terrible time recruiting there. The good players from the Iowa junior ranks are all going to play in Minnesota or Michigan. Realistically you would be looking at getting the junior players who aren't good enough to make it on 80% of the D1 teams.
I guess the question is would you rather be one of the upper club teams right now, or move up to D1 and look forward to consistently finishing near last place in one of the major conferences?

No, they do not serve beer in the new arena. However, there are no re-entry rules
I have gone to the majority of hockey games this season, and although I wasn't around for the 'good ol days' i can tell you that they are still a blast. Usually we start by drinking before the game, then we 'tailgate' (drink more). During the game, we sprint out during intermissions and usually pound 2 more before, so rest assured, the fans are still as rowdy and lawless as ever.
For those who have never been to an ISU hockey game, you don't know what you're missing. It's neither slow, nor boring. Plus when you yell smack the players actually hear you. The highlight of the season so far was getting flipped off by the Mizzou players.
I hope that Pollard makes it a NCAA sport. From what I hear, Doc Murdoch is still pushing hard for it. I'd much rather see it a varsity sport than baseball.
Cyclone_Power... why don't you stop slamming the team (and the fact that it's a club sport) and give us a chance? Don't you think that some of the upper-level players in IA would stay in-state given a chance? Right now they have no other choice but to go out-of-state to play NCAA hockey. I know the first few years would be rough, but long-term I don't think that moving up in the ranks would be the death sentence that you make it out to be.

It's not meant to be slamming the team, but rather the facts. Tell me what conference ISU would join and actually get any decent recruits. Like I said, the only conference that makes sense for travel is the CCHA, and that conference would be too difficult to start out in. Talent wise, ISU's only option would be looking at joining one of the smaller conferences like the CHA (like Bemidji State did), but traveling would be awful there.
As far as your comment about upper-level players staying in-state, I really don't see too much of that happening. Most the upper level players are not from Iowa anyway, and are just using the Junior ranks here as a stepping stone to play on a good college team.

Anyway, you have to understand that I LOVE hockey. I'm a big NHL fan and have gone to many, many Stars and Bucs games along with ISU club games. ISU's club program is consistently one of the best in the nation. Rome wasn't built in a day, and hockey is a sport that is shrinking in interest nationwide, and is gaining some interest in Iowa. So we need stepping stones here, and I think it's fair to say that Iowa State hockey is championship-grade material, for what can be found in Iowa. We need to support them, and be the Johnny Appleseeds of interest in this sport. We're not going to get the same level of talent that Maine or DU is going to get when the interest in the sport is in the gestational period.

Iowa does have four USHL teams (Des Moines, Waterloo, Sioux City, Cedar Rapids) so I don't know how Iowa State wouldn't be a factor in recruiting if they made the jump to NCAA. For every player that wants to play for an storied, elite franchise, there is another that is willing to be a star on a team that needs to build tradition. There's nothing to keep Okposo from choosing Iowa State over Minnesota after suiting up for Des Moines.
Yes, it would take time but all teams begin somewhere, and Iowa State would be central to four minor teams to recruit prime talent from. That's quite the advantage for a team making the jump.
You must be kidding...nothing other than a shot at making it huge in the NHL in a few years. You aren't going to get any exposure playing for a Huntsville or Niagara anytime soon. There's a reason all the good USHL'ers go the WCHA, CCHA and Hockey East. To win championships and make it to the bigs!
But you're right, we would have a good shot at getting some of the non-standout players from the USHL. But you sir are crazy if you think an Okposo or Kessel is going to WANT to play for ISU.

Hardly equivalent. Fizer going to ISU is still a large conference with lots of exposure. That would be like Okposo choosing Michigan St or Ohio St to play at, instead of Minnesota. Okposo choosing to play for an ISU would be like Fizer committing to Northern Iowa or Drake.
Iowa State won in the sixth round of the shootout last night to defeat No. 17 Robert Morris 4-3.

They play again tonight around 8:30 (the game starts following the conclusion of the women's game against Minnesota).

I second that! The shoot out was awesome last night and I will be there again tonight. I am absolutely hooked on Cyclone hockey. I hope they can make it a Div. I NCAA team. I would much rather see hockey than baseball come back. I would love for us to compete at the level of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, etc.

Another exciting win for Cyclone Hockey tonight. The women's team played really well (much improved over their play I witnessed last season) and fell 3-2 against Minnesota.
In the nightcap the Cyclone men defeated Robert Morris 4-3 in overtime for a series sweep against their league rival. Assistant captain Allen Raushel had the game winner on an awesome individual effort which shows why he's going to Italy next month to represent Team USA in the World Games.
Also announced tonight, the Cyclones will play their January 27 game against second-ranked, traditional Big XII rival Oklahoma in Des Moines at Wells Fargo Arena. Iowa State will play before the Iowa Stars game against Chicago so it should be a great day of hockey in Des Moines.
