Cyclone Hockey

Why has hockey never really caught on in this state? IMO, it's sad to see roughly 5,000 at an Iowa Stars game. If people in this state gave hockey a chance, they'd be hook on it in a heartbeat.
Well, we need to give the Stars a chance first. They've only been around for one full season and are just in the middle of their second. I think folks will start to realize that the Stars are not competition to the beloved Bucs; they are a complimentary program.

You're right- Stars attendance is relatively low, compared to the area population. But Bucs attendance is very high, and has been for years. I'm sure the Stars will work their way up there, given the time.

I am a big hockey fan, but I hate the Stars. Any team that moves from Minneapolis to Dallas does not get my support and that includes their farm team in Des Moines. I am happy to see the Wild are off to a hot start.

If someone never saw a hockey game in the 80s/early 90s, they have no idea the riot it was. Its not possible to do it justice by describing it. Lawless or anarchy are nice adjectives. Dollar beer and the people serving the beer were those sentenced to community service for DUI. Talk about irony.

Yeah, I know what your talking about. I was in school 92-97 and went to quite a few hockey games. It was a blast. And don't forget about the open skate sessions that followed where a bunch of drunks put on skates and tried to skate like the players. HAahahaha! Great stuff.

Same time frame, same place, same memories. The only downfall was the long cold walks after the games back to the dorm. The old rink was quite a distance from Lyon Hall.

Where was Lyon? Can't picture where that is? Old RCA?

I lived in Larch but rarely walked to the games. Walked home from a lot of them, though :) Had to get the car the next day but was better than a OWI.

Old RCA, remember the arched walk way? Lyon was the building on the north end of the arches. Home of Barker and Harwood houses.

Here's just a quick update on the Cyclone hockey team in their games against Iowa and the results of the Muscular Dystrophy Association night in Des Moines.

In Des Moines, Iowa State beat Iowa 9-2 and raised over $3000 for the MDA.

In Cedar Rapids, Iowa State won again, this time 11-1.

ISU is ranked sixth in the nation and is now 9-3-2.

A quick update on the hockey team:

They're ranked sixth in the nation with a record of 13-5-2. This past weekend they swept North Dakota State on the road by scores of 7-2 and 4-0 (first shutout of the year for the Cyclones and first collegiate shutout for Swedish freshman Christian Johansson).

This coming weekend Iowa State is playing No. 5 Ohio who is regarded as a powerhouse in the ACHA. The Bobcats have won the league regular season crown each of the past three years and were national champions in 2004.

Here's a good way to support the team and Iowa State in general:

http://www.uscho.com has a poll about two-thirds of the way down asking which ACHA team would best fit a jump to NCAA. ISU's currently running third behind Penn State and Illinois. Help them out!

Also, I just watched the Al Murdoch Show (ISUtv) and they said you can get a dollar off admission for wearing red to this Saturday's game.

I agree Bryce. I never watch hockey on TV because it bores me.

But live, it's a ton of fun!

i agree, i went to my fisrt hockey game about 2weeks ago..because i won tickets.. and i had a blast, i thought i would hate it but it was alot of fun..i will say i can never watch it on tv but live is outstanding

We should fire the coaches, build new facilities, spend more money...wait hockey? Sorry I was using my template. I hope the hockey team does get some publicity they are good.

Doc Murdock is a legend. You do not fire a 38 consecutive year coach. Just ask Paterno.

Hockey is a great sport! It's good to see it gaining popularity, although slowly. I honestly have only seen two ISU hockey games. I did see them kick the crap out of Iowa a month ago. :sweet: They were great except for the power play. I should make it a point to go see more of their games.

It would be nice to see ISU's program go to NCAA level. Although, if they are happy being a successful club sport, that's great. At least they get cheerleaders! :yes4lo:

I have to agree that watching hockey on TV is boring. Baseball is just as freaking boring live as on TV. I hope ISU NEVER brings back that ridiculous boredom.

Football is America's pastime.

I think we should go D1 in hockey so we could finally be the southern school in something. Instead of going to play in Duluth, St. Cloud, or Grand Forks, we can recruit players to come play in warm and sunny Ames. Sounds better to me than trying to build a baseball program in the same conference with a bunch of Texas and Oklahoma schools.

hilarious and sad but true.

they may not like it when the ice melts.

wish I could make more Hockey games. Hockey on tv sucks but in person its a awesome tough competitive sport.

Iowa State upset #5 Ohio last night with two goals in the final five minutes. I have NEVER heard the new arena so loud as the tying goal. It was a great atmosphere and a fantastic turnout.

The rematch is this afternoon at 1:15 (with an albeit much smaller crowd on a Sunday and against the men's basketball game).

I highly doubt they serve beer at the games. I haven't been to a game for a couple years, but I'm pretty sure they didn't.

And about the 7 bucks...trust me, it can add up fast when you're a college kid like myself :sad9cd: For me, I would much rather save my money to see a concert at the M-shop, go to an Iowa Stars game, or make a road trip up to see a Twins game in Minneapolis.

When I was at ISU (Class of 01) I lived in the Gateway Hills Apartment complex for awhile and damn....That was fun to go into the old rink and drink about 14 beers and walk home. The chants at the other team were great. I am not sure about the beer sales now though.

I am nieve since I am older than you. When did they change locations and where is the new rink located? Thanks

The new rink is located straight south of the Towers, on the south side of Mortensen and next to the ISU Surplus building. I think it opened 6 years ago? I'm not sure.

the ISU surplus building is the old hockey rink lol. I lived in Wilson 99-01. And went to alot of games and not to mention broomball there.
