So, CN has started to cover Cyclone hockey, and, IMO - it's about time. Now, if they covered it before, my apologies. I just don't ever recall seeing anything about ISU hockey on any Cyclone website.

So, with that, here's a link to an article done by CN on the Cyclone hockey team.

I skimmed the piece and will actually read it later. Just wanted to share with everyone.

And...does anyone actually attend hockey games? We do when we have time and plan to hit a handful this year.

Perhaps...a CF night at a hockey game. We did defeat Iowa last year, 10-0 or something like that. I know, 'cuz we were there. :wink0st:

Cyclone hockey is great! We're ranked, we win a lot, and nobody spends countless hours on message boards discussing firing coach Murdoch.

We should fire the coaches, build new facilities, spend more money...wait hockey? Sorry I was using my template. I hope the hockey team does get some publicity they are good.

Didnt they win it all a few years back just to have it stripped away because of an ex pro player? lol I loved those games. Always had a great turnout and cheering section.

funny I should see this thread. I was home this morning with a sick kid and was listening to Omaha's Big Sports 590. Tuesday's between 10-11, an entire hour is devoted to hockey in the 590 listening area (Sioux Falls to Omaha to Kearney, NE back to DSM).

I've been to a couple of Stars games and it just blows my mind the lack of interest people have with this awsome sport in the state of Iowa. Go just over 100 miles to the north and hockey is all the rage, here in Iowa it'll never be nothing more than a niche sport.

...here in Iowa it'll never be nothing more than a niche sport.

Well, it'll never beat football or basketball for the general populace's attentions, but the Bucs have a loyal, sizable following here in DSM. The Stars will be a little bit tougher sell, but I hope they succeed.

I used to go to a few Cyclone Hockey games when I lived in Ames, they do a great job creating a fun environment there.

I used to play hockey when I was a kid, so I can attest to the fact that Hockey is a fantastic game to play. Hockey for me falls into the baseball category though, where I really don't get into watching it. I used to love playing Hockey and I love playing baseball and slow-pitch, but it's tough for me to get into attending hockey and baseball games. Just too slow for my tastes.

Hockey is an exciting sport but people have a hard time following the rules and play. It doesnt get more exciting have goalies fighting each other or the game ending with a shootout. The Waterloo Blackhawks have a huge and loyal fanbase but it cant compare to football or bball.

I"m almost sure the last National Championship they won was back in 1992, but they're always a strong team and win most all of their games at home.

They don't serve beer in the new arena, which is certainly a drag, but the games are still a good time.

Why would people care about firing the leader of an ISU CLUB?

Because Cyclone Hockey is one of the more prestigious Iowa State teams around. Because they're ranked fifth in the nation. Because they've never missed a national championship. Because Murdoch is the father of the program and has coached in all 38 years of the programs existence. Because he's the reason there is an ice rink in Ames. Because he's the reason there is an intercollegiate hockey team. Because he's the reason there's intramural broomball. Because he's done so much for the sport that the trophy the Cyclones play for is called the Murdoch Cup.

I agree Bryce. I never watch hockey on TV because it bores me.

But live, it's a ton of fun!

The boys play Arizona State in the first of their Homecoming matches this weekend. ISU is fifth-ranked in the nation, Arizona State is ranked tenth. Starts at 7:30. Should be a good one.

I agree that Murdoch is a great guy, but the fact remains that it is still just that - CLUB hockey. Coming from a hometown where hockey is very popular, I just don't see how people can get into paying $7 to see a club team play.

Heck, in Minnesota most the high school Single A teams I played against would compete with the ISU club team. AA wouldn't even be close. I would much rather go and see a Gophers game and see a top 5 NCAA team for $30. Just my thoughts. I've always chuckled when I hear people talk about how 'good' the ISU hockey team is.

You really have to take it relative to the culture. Like you said, hockey is huge in Minnesota. Pretty much every high school has a team, and the UofM has a fantastic team. In Iowa, however, hockey almost does not exist. There are only a handful of high schools in the state that have programs, and because there are so few, they compete in a single regional league against each other that stretches from Lincoln, NE all the way to Chicago.

It's possible that you're right when you say that teams from Minnesota's high school leagues could easily compete with Iowa State's club team. But when you compare the ISU club team to the high school teams in our state, ISU is good. ISU plays in an organization filled with schools that do not have funded hockey programs. For pete's sake, there's not much ice in Arizona! Your analogy doesn't make sense- people can talk all they want about how "good" the top-ranked high school basketball team in the state is, but that team probably isn't going to be able to compete with a collegiate program, even a bad one. It doesn't mean that high school team is a bad team- they are still the best out of all their peer programs. But collegiate basketball is on an entirely different level. That's exactly what we have with Iowa State hockey. Iowa State is a great team within their peers. They don't typically compete against the NCAA hockey schools for a reason- it's not their place. You can't say that the top-ranked soccer team in the United States is a "good" team, because the B-squad from the University of Berlin could come in and whup their sorry keisters all over the field.

There will always be somebody better, so it's necessary to compartmentalize the way we have.

Personally, I'm perfectly happy to get some quality entertainment on a Saturday night for as cheap as $7.

We used to go to hockey games when I was in school, and it was great fun. Best of all, they served beer at the games. Do they still? Sure, it is just a club sport. Is there Club Football? Maybe we could drop the whole Div-1A thing and have a better time!

Anybody who chokes on 7 bucks for any sporting event at all hasn't paid for an NFL game lately. It's chump change, and supports the team. I would rather pay 7 bucks to watch club hockey against the glass than $100 to watch NHL Hockey near the glass.

Yeah I see where you're coming from. I guess it's just that people from Minnesota, Illinois and Michigan probably have a lot different perspective on the hockey team than those from Iowa and Nebraska. I guess if I didn't grow up around hockey players I would see it differently too.

I highly doubt they serve beer at the games. I haven't been to a game for a couple years, but I'm pretty sure they didn't.

And about the 7 bucks...trust me, it can add up fast when you're a college kid like myself :sad9cd: For me, I would much rather save my money to see a concert at the M-shop, go to an Iowa Stars game, or make a road trip up to see a Twins game in Minneapolis.

For all of the alumni and fans residing in or around Des Moines, I highly recommend attending the November 3 game at 95KGGO Arena (aka Bucs Arena aka Metro Ice Sports Arena) that is announced on the main page. It's an Iowa/Iowa State matchup (one of the few ISU may take from U of I this season) and it's for a really great cause. Plus, if you don't come to the Cyclone Hockey games now because you miss having beer served at the arena, this is definitely not a problem at the Bucs Arena.
